Is there anyone on this board from the program? I have an interview there coming up pretty soon and wanted to know a bit about the interview itself and the program. Any info anybody would like to share would greatly be appreciated!

you'd probably be better off doing a search. there's always talk on U of C each year. also, they have a great website, so there's no reason you can't learn more about them with a simple mouse click.

regarding the interview. dr. howz, the pd, will give you his 30 min liberal as thou speech before you tour 1 or 2 of their EDs, and perhaps sit in on their resident conference before meeting with 3 attendings, separately. about 15-20 mins each. at least that's what we did 3 years ago.

if you dont interview with dr. howz he will meet with you at the end of the day to feel you out. if he wants you, he will tell you.

oh, and you will have a catered lunch with the residents

Is there anyone that Dr. Howse DOESN'T say he wants at the end of the day? It's been kind of funny comparing stories on the trail; it seems everyone has heard that from him...

Yes, there are. I talked to an applicant some time ago who says that during their interview, he specifically said, "You know, I just don't think we're the right program for you. You're a great applicant, but we just don't match well."

I myself got slightly positive feedback. Something along the lines of, "You're a strong applicant, I'm sure you'll do great in the match." Nothing along the lines of him wanting me to come to the program, but giving me an idea that I was not out of the running.

Dr. Howse has been doing this a long time, I hear that he solicits applicants as strongly as he wants them, ranging from UNsolicitation to lukewarm to positive reception to outright saying "I want you in this program."

Congratulations on your interview at the U of C. I applied to about 30 programs, many of which are arguably stronger than U of C, yet Chicago was the only one that declined to give me an interview.

I actually interviewed with Dr. Howes when I was applying to U of C for medical school. Instead of engaging me in conversation or asking me questions, he took phone calls during the interview and went through a list of residency applications asking me what I thought about the applicants' medical schools. During the few minutes when we actually my application, he was argumentative. In retrospect, I should have asked the office of admissions for another interview.

Hopefully Dr. Howes has learned how to conduct an interview during the past 4 years and things will go better for you.

Let me wait until after the match to tell you that. Suffice it to say that I must have ended up in a medical school on Dr. Howes' **** list. 😀

Hey Ruby... I hope your interview went well. Yes, Dr. Howes heavily recruits people he is interested in. He does not feed everyone a line and try to hook and sink people he's not interested in. If you are interested in the program or have any questions, let me know.
