Can a female wear a nice vest, instead of a jacket to an interview?

So a nice vest, a nice shirt and pant? Would that be okay or not conservative enough because of the vest?

I don't really have a comment but.....

Most schools expect business formal but I dont think anybody realy cares if you go w/ a vest. I think there's a interview clothing thread for women, you might have better luck there.

this looks pretty nice but I have a feeling it's going to look less appropriate - if your fellow candidates are dressed in jackets.

If the vest was formal enough you could probably pull it off but in my mind, the question is why?

When it comes to interview attire the best impact you can hope for is that it detracts nothing from your application - the best way to do that is to dress like anyone else would.

I don't mean to suggest that you will be rejected because you wore a vest, I'm just saying I don't see the point in pushing the boundaries, even slightly, because don't feel comfortable in a jacket, or because you feel you look bangin' in a vest. If it's the case that you are hard up and can't really afford to buy a jacket, then I'd ask that you reconsider: suits and jackets are long-term investments, even if you pick something simple up for $112 or just a jacket for $50.

I don't think a vest will ever look as formal as a jacket. Also, if you buy the jacket+pant suit combo, it will come in handy later on.

I think the puffy sleeves make her look like she's 12.

nah, i'd go with the jacket/pants to be on the safe side. not saying that it can't look professional, but its just not conventional. better to be on the safer side, imo.

If you've got a strong application, it is not likely to matter to the adcom as long as it is modest (no sheer fabric or low cut). I saw someone with a long belted sweater get admitted this year and a year or two ago a woman in a glossy blouse without any jacket at all was admitted.

On the other hand, if looking like everyone else is a comfort and if "playing it safe" is your thing, then you might want to wear a jacket rather than a vest.
