congrats!

Maybe I'll try no suit. Maybe it's a sign. . .

I had my first interview today and was puzzled about what to wear. I actually didnt know this site existed until one of my fellow interviewers told me about it!!!
Thanks so much!! This is SUCH a great place to get ideas and see what other applicants are thinking

BUY A SUIT

A suit is pretty much the staple of any wardrobe (on top of white dress shirt, blue jeans, leather belt)

A good $200-400 suit will last you a long time. Dances, Formals, Weddings, Funerals, Interviews. Best money you can spend

Meh, I've already spent a couple hundred dollars applying, and am about to spend almost as much on the trip down there. Im not about to go out and spend that much on a suit right now, I know money is not an issue for some people but I just don't have that type of cash right now and I am not into asking for it. If I get an interview I am really pumped about I'll considernig renting or borrowing one. I can be professional and take it seriously without wearing a suit.

Wear a suit. Otherwise you will stick out like a sore thumb. I haven't seen ANYONE without a suit yet. It doesn't have to be fancy, but you need one. In this case you are being penny wise, pound foolish.

I actually haven't been wearing a suit or a tie in my interviews . I always was under the assumption that academia was never as fickle as the business world. All I wore was dress shirt, pants, shoes - and my interview wasn't a disaster in any respect, besides it's hell to bring on an airplane right? But good call, I'll definitely suit it up for the next one.

aecom?

For those who are in the same boat with little cash on hand, I would recommend eBay. I bought a Ralph Lauren suit on there (just pants and jacket) for about $60. It was used, yes, but no stains or anything. My guess it was a rental at one time. Anyways, my only complaint is that it's a bit tight around the shoulders, but very nice nonetheless.

For those looking for suits, don't do this. Odds are, you don't understand what your measurements should be for a proper fit and will end up with a disaster. Shopping online is great, but often hit-or-miss. Either you screw up the measurements, or the seller does. If you already have a suit, sure - go ahead and experiment. But don't let the great deals goad you into buying your only interview suit online.

Go into a store, get measured, get a suit altered, have them write down your measurements for the future.
