I recently received an interview invitation from a program I think I'm no longer interested in, and it makes me think it might not be worth a plane ticket to go interview. Part of me thinks I should schedule a late interview date, see how my earlier interviews go, and cancel (with plenty of time for them to schedule a replacement) if my earlier interviews go well and I anticipate that I probably wouldn't rank this program very highly. On the other hand, I also think that even with a month or so notice I might be screwing somebody else out of a spot and so I should just politely decline now. Advice?

If you're absolutely sure you won't like this program, cancel now. Of course, there's no way to actually tell this without going there, and there's no way to know if you'll like other programs more until you go to see them. So...I like your first idea. Schedule a mid-Jan interview. If you've found 10 places you like and would be happy to be a part of by the end of Dec, cancel. If not, get on a plane and find out what that place is all about.
