So hurricane florence is supposed to hit my state next week. I have back to back interviews Wednesday and Thursday in state when the hurricane is supposed to make landfall.. any idea how things will shake out if the storm ends up being as severe as is expected?

Do schools typically cancel and reschedule interviews if necessary for severe weather?

Given we are pretty early in thy cycle it is likely they will reschedule. I would call the office to see what their policy is and what they are preparing to do. While it is residency rather than medical school-I know several people who weren't able to make their interview due to snow storms last year and the school did not have the resources or time slots to reschedule. Meanwhile I know other spots that did video interviews. If you're really excited about the place make sure you're in the area before the weather descends (if you can)!

Any update on this, wandering student1? That storm looks pretty intimidating!

Called admissions at both schools today.... They said so far interviews are on, they will be able to reschedule if the storm ends up wiping us off the map. Luckily I'm very local (within 1.5 hr of both programs) so if it's driveable I'll be there! so As far as storm tracker goes, nothing here in VA yet! Supposed to hit us on Thursday so we are stocking up on bottled water and hunkering down. One more obstacle to getting to med school I suppose

Also keep in mind, those of you who do have interviews in the south or along the eastern seaboard, you may have a flight that connects through Charlotte or other airports that may be affected by the hurricane and it is very likely flights will be cancelled or routes changed, etc. even if your interview is not in NC, SC or VA.

I had an interview the day it’s supposed to make landfall, and it’s like a 6-7 hour drive to the school, the whole way through the hurricane path. I didn’t want to drive in the hurricane or leave my family at home so I called and asked them about it, and they were totally receptive to rescheduling. I feel like sometimes people are afraid to do stuff like that because it might look bad, but a hurricane is not something you can control. I think most schools realize that.

how bad is it going to be in North Carolina? anybody know 🙁

National Hurricane Center for your up-t0-date hurricane info.
Florence is expecting to produce life-threatening storm surges.

I can't blame institutions for cancelling interviews. I'd not ask my staff to risk their lives to go out in a storm to welcome interviewees who could be accomodated later in the cycle. It is likely that airlines will permit you to reschedule without penalty given that the flights are likely to be cancelled. If you are driving, be thankful you are not driving in dangerous weather.

Yes, glad to be safe. Now that my interview has been rescheduled at EVMS my family can relocate being as we are in an evacuation zone. Heading to Richmond tomorrow morning to try and get inland before the storm and be ready for VCU if they remain on schedule.

Stay safe SDNers!

Medical student in NC here- classes are canceled until at least Monday, possibly longer, and that NEVER happens in med school. it's pretty bad, to say the least

So where are people evacuating to? Are there flood-proof shelters??
Sending my prayers out that the flood will not be too bad.

Im testing next Wednesday and I didn't get any emails from them as of yet and I'm suppose to get there on Sunday and honestly I think I will cancel my flight, as much as I wanna take the exam I rather be safe .🙁 Also, Im pretty sure they will have power issues, how did I get this lucky :🙁(((((((((

Very bad. NC is expected to get hit the worst and essentially get pounded for days.
Yup. Classes are cancelled at Duke starting Wednesday last I heard.

Faculty & staff are already evacuating. I can't be sure about the faculty who teach classes but I expect that they are simply cancelling that day's class and leaving early. If anyone's interviewing in NC, I would just reschedule. Same goes for SC and coastal VA. (and if you're waiting to hear back from a school in these areas, expect that wait to increase)

On a brighter note, as long as the power holds and their homes remain undamaged, faculty members who are supposed to be reviewing applications may have plenty of free time to do so from home.

its down to category 3, maybe I can still fly out to NC to take the test on Wednesday

If I have an interview in NC in about 2 weeks, I probably won’t be affected right?
