I'm preparing for an interview and was getting stuck on the following qeustions. What are some your opinions to the following questions?

The 14-year-old daughter of a good friend comes into your office asking for birth control. What are your ethical obligations in this situation and how would you respond?

Your friends 14 yr. old daughter asks you for birthcontrol pills OUTSIDE of your clinic? Do you tell her parents?

What is the one thing that you want us to remember you by after you leave?

A child shows up to the ER with no insurance. What would you do?

Here is my advice for your questions. I am only a second year so if anyone doesn't agree with what I post please correct me.

We were taught that the law is in Florida that you cannot notify her parents if she gets birth control. You cannot even let them know about the visit for billing purposes or whatever other reason. I don't know if this varies state to state.

If she asked you for birth control pills you should have her come in for an appointment, to determine if she is already pregnant, etc. and the above applies in regards to telling her parents.

What is the one thing that you want us to remember you by after you leave? You must find something about you that makes you stand out and that you believe makes you the special person you are and use that to answer that question

A child shows up to the ER with no insurance. What would you do? That depends on your state law and the hospital that you work for. In many states you must see everyone w/out regards to whether or not they have insurance. Some hospitals also have programs for people who are uninsured. I would take care of them and worry about how they are going to pay later.

Hope that helps. ShaR

Are there many programs asking ethical questions to residency applicants during interviews? How lame. I only had this at one program I went to (the only D.O. program I interviewed at) and they went as far as to have four of us applicants sit in front of all the faculty and go over two separate ethical issues covered on two pages of information. We were then supposed to produce a conversation amongst ourselves about the issues and pretend that the faculty werent there! How lame is that?? I felt like I was back trying to get into med school all over again and that I was being looked lown on and scrutinized pretty heavily. Ironically I think I performed well during the "fishbowl" experience and got good feedback but thought less of the program for even screwing around with this garbage. I won't be participating in the DO match.

At all the other programs I went to I felt at ease, felt like a peer, not looked down on and like they were genuinely interested in me and wanted to get to know me - very good experiences.

Where was this at? I think if something like that happens to me when it is my turn I might just thank them for the interview and leave, but I am all talk so maybe not.

Since I'm a friend of thanks...I'll answer this question...it was in Phoenix...I agree with you though, I would probably thank them as well and take off. I think the other question that would make me get up and leave is "What kitchen appliance would you be" or a variant of that. Are you serious? "I would be the kitchen knife...because I'm cuttin' ties with you right now, thank you very much".

I think you know those people at JCL (John C Lincoln - PHX AZ for those who asked) - can you believe that? It was really kind of comical.

I have to agree that there are simply certain BS interview tactics that will have me walking out the door and never looking back. If anyone asks me to name the cords of the brachial plexus, the generic name of Viagra, or some crazy ethical struggle, then I will just eat the cost of my travel and kindly excuse myself.

Sidebar: Has anyone ever heard of a program helping pay for your travel to come interview?

I have heard of some that pay for something when you interview...I was going to interview in El Paso, TX and they were covering 150 for travel costs. Flying on southwest and getting a cheap place to stay I would have made a few bucks...also some places give discounted rates on hotel or even free night stay. I'm interviewing at Mayo in Rochester, MN and they give free night stay.

The only places I interviewed that DIDN'T provide a free night's stay were in Colorado. Duluth paid $100 for travel expenses. The Wisconsin AFP pays $500 if you interview at 4 places in the state, they'll pay more $ if you interview more places.
