Some programs just divide and conquer. Each faculty member might get 50 random applications and get to pick out 4 they want to interview, for example... and not everyone turns in their list at the same time.

agree w/ this. it really depends on the program. some programs only offer one round of interviews but some offer more than one. also, i was on the waitlist for a couple of schools and ended up getting interviews later.
 
I most definitely received a late round invite when I applied -- they do happen.
 
What's reasonable to expect at this point? 2-4 interviews? 0 interviews? :idea:

last time around i had 0 at this point, ended up with 9. didn't get my first invite until just after thanksgiving.
 
this is so brutal. It kills me to see the interviews rolling in while I have none. yet, i am drawn to this site like a moth to a flame.

apparently my app is not dazzling people. shame. I thought I looked pretty damn good on paper. maybe it's that I come from a no name school.
 
Agreed. I had a minor freaking out moment just a bit ago. Just have to keep reminding myself that it's still early. But still, why do the derm folks torture us like this?!?

Every time I look at this site I freak out and get chest pain.

Thank god some of the previous applicants have posted to keep me grounded - you have no idea how much your words mean to us!
 
agree with the previous several posts,
everytime I come on here I get depressed and Im like wtf is wrong with me, why havent I heard anything from anybody, save the 3 rejections from the schools that probably filled spots already (Buffalo, Okla and S and W)

It really sucks to have to wait this long, I suppose the silver lining to all of this is that I submitted Oct 18 as opposed to Sept 1st, so my wait isnt as crazy as some others, but still this period of the next 2-3 weeks blows

Not knowing anything is torture

I am happy for the other applicants and wish them nothing but the best of luck, but it's hard. No, your word is best, it's torture. But maybe they just haven't had time to fully process our apps. (Let's be hopeful today, shall we? Ha ha!) 🙂

Yeah I got the UMich one too. That one is a big program (9 residents per year?)... so that hurt. What are they looking for?? I guess I just suck. I'm getting kinda scared.... :scared:

how are you finding out these dates on interviews, if you yourself arent getting them

is it your friends who are also applying to derm

also is it safe to assume that if you havent been offered one of the above mentioned dates, that you probably wont be getting an interview from the programs you guys have listed

Yeah, agreed! Their letter was much better than S&W's. He sounded very sincere. I almost felt bad for him for having to reject us (ok I take that back... it must still be easier to send out rejections than to receive them... one after another... 🙁 )

Izzy, was your post asking me in particular or asking everyone? I augmented our SDN list from the dates on DIGA. The link is here: http://www.derminterest.org/ Hmm... I just checked the link and the site is down for some reason. They have a calendar of dates, compiled from PD's. Last I checked, it looked like about half of the programs had submitted dates.

Some other people might be posting dates that their friends got... I don't know. Maybe some other people will speak up. Sounds like most people are just posting ones that they got.

from that website, jan. looks like a super packed month, even with only half of programs listed. this means that on a given day, there may be 5-8 programs interviewing. this isn't a problem for an inferior applicant like myself, but how do 'superstars' with 20+ interviews manage to go to all of them?

they don't. most people with a ton of interviews have to let some go. we can only hope and pray they do so in a timely matter so that other applicants can pick up a couple of more interviews.

last time i applied umich accidentally didn't hide the email addresses of the people they were rejecting, so along with the rejection you got a list of people who were also being rejected. ha ha. at least they got their act together this time.

I got wait listed at Michigan, but I have to say that the letter (which had a predominant theme of "you're almost certainly rejected") has got to be the nicest letdown letter ever. Well-crafted, sincere and not at all patronizing. Too bad...if a PD can get that empathetic with people he's saying "no" (or "almost no") to, imagine how he is with patients. He would be a hell of a guy to learn from.

I am also trying to keep my chin up. 1 IV, 2 rejections and a waitlist...I was truly hoping for better. I am certainly thankful for my 1, as it could very easily have been zero, and certainly do not mean to add to anyone's set of woes. Hopefully things will turn around for all of us over the next few weeks.

Also, to address the post earlier stating that "4 times as many people are applying this year than last" is probably not at all accurate. I am certain that there are probably more qualified candidates than normal, but to increase the pool by a factor of 4 in 1 year is almost certainly a gross miscalculation on someone's part...or atleast I hope it is. I did speak with 1 PD who stated that they felt that their overall number of applications had decreased since last year. So FWIW, maybe that will help some of you folks sleep a bit easier as we approach turkey day.
 
Has everyone received something from UMich (invite, rejection, or waitlist)? I haven't heard anything from them yet.....and i don't think it's physically possible to check my email anymore often than i do in a day...

I feel slightly sick to my stomach every time I open up this thread. With my grand total of 0 invites, I'm really starting to freak out at this point.

Do NOT freak out at this point. There are a lot of people who have 0 invites. The vast vast vast majority of invites are still to come. It truly only takes one place that's a good fit.

Yup. Nothing here except for a michigan rejection. If I hear nothing by December, I'm going to start putting my plan B in motion.

What are some plan B options people usually consider?
 
p.s. I only applied to 20 something. Most of the programs I applied to still haven't issued any invites, so I'm still hoping for the best.

What happens if a derm applicant doesn't match, and doesn't have a plan B? I'm sure your Deans will want you to scramble, right? But what if you don't want to settle on another specialty in the scramble, then what?
