Hey vikvaz,
UTH gets around 120-150 applications usually (not sure if it's different this year), interviews ~25-45%, and has about 6 or 7 fully funded spots.

Georgetown's program is also fairly small, so I would expect similar numbers, but I do not know specifics.

Where are you applying?
 
Anybody else get the invite from Columbia for Friday, Nov. 8th? Do you know what other MD/PhD days they have available, and if they'll reschedule easily?

Sluox and Simon, since I didn't get an interview offer at Cornell, I'll most likely be at Columbia the same day as you. I'm pretty amped for that interview. Has anyone else been there yet?

Guys, what is your opinion of NYU's MSTP?

I've been complete there for a while, and they've been buggin me for my app fee. Debating whether to send or not. Doesn't seem like they have much cool neuro stuff happening...
 
they have good systems neuroscience stuff (according to sluox) but i don't know if anything up your ally canem. its one of the oldest programs i think. i hear they treat you nice at interviews - but thats all i know. havent' heard anything overwhelmingly positive.
 
Updating, updating... withdrew from UT-Houston today. We couldn't work out scheduling, and then I asked myself why I was giving myself such a headache about it when they wouldn't work with me. In the beginning, I wasn't planning on applying there anyway... too close to home! :) I may regret it later... but thought I should give someone else a chance at the interview slot!

Hey, do any of you know how many of us are interviewing at Cornell this Friday? I imagine it is a pretty large group.... and what exactly is the "clinical interview" that is in addition to the med school interview?

Adding UT-Southwestern and U. Rochester.

Oh... and if any of you have figured out how to do classes AND interviews effectively, I would like some pointers!!

a resounding no. when i'm at school for the couple days i'm here its like finals time 24/7. i just think, is this the easy life - and it gets busier? i'm hoping no but its probably going to get more crazy.

about those going to cornell - hopefully you'll be able to recognize me - introduce yourself! looking forward to it - i'm interviewin with a guy that just won the lasker award (uhoh) which should be cool. see some of you soon.

NYU doesn't pay for travel expenses, but they do put you up in a hotel free of charge.

money was the reason I didn't apply to as many schools as any of these other guys. As far as interview expenses, all of the places I applied are within driving distance for me (in the Northeast), except for Wash U and UT. WashU pays for everything and my lab at UT will probably pay for me to come down. As far as housing, every place I am interviewing or have interviewed provides free accomodations, either through a student host or putting us up in hotels.

I'm in the minority, though, most people find the money to fly so they can interview coast-to-coast. Those interviewing at the Cali schools or those who live in Cali can have some pretty steep bills to take care of! But no matter what, we all still have it better than regular MD applicants, as far as finances.
 
Yeah I'm with CaNEM. I only applied to schools that I could drive to or would pay interview expenses. There are a couple schools I applied to that won't pay for airfare that I thought did (Baylor for example), but other than that, this whole interviewing thing shouldn't bankrupt me.

Congrats on WashU jot. With that and all your interviewers I'm certain that you can go wherever you choose.

I'm green with envy :) WashU doesn't love me... They sent me that book and then waitlisted me. lol.
 
As for paying for this: I have a salaried position at a university, and it's still getting pretty dang expensive on my "real world" budget. It's a tough call, though. I want to go to a program that I believe in and I only see that right off the page in a couple programs to which I applied. Thus I'm spending a little green to make sure I'm happy for the next 7 years.

Also, it's interesting to note that most of the schools in sexy locales don't offer to pay, whilst those in the colder states seem to be more likely to dish out travel costs.

I am with mjs. I have a lab job on salary to pay for everything. Just all the apps are are expensive. I have spent around $1500 so far. I am just getting all my letters in so I have not even started trying to travel anywhere. I am hoping that I get the chance.

God i was staying up all night re-readnig "MSTP Boulvard" from last year. 'Tis dramatic. This year's comparable thread "interview invites" is simply too dry and list-like

tho i do wonder where people'd go in the end...

I have noticed some general trends

WashU and UCSF interview polar opposite applicants
People who get in early often cancel many interview invitations, forcing admissions official to schedule additional interviews
etc etc

I'm confused. 3.95-41's posts imply that they interviewed at both Cornell & Wash U. last weekend. Is this possible? Cornell's MSTP has only had one interview date, october 25, so they had to be there last weekend. But their 10/30/02 post in the thread titled "interview feed back" on this pre-MD/PHD forum they said they were at Wash U. "last weekend", which I can only assume means the 25th. Was the Cornell interview MD only and done earlier in the year? Maybe I am just misreading this post. :confused: :confused:
 
haha - whatcha sayin, 3.95-41 is an mstp charlatan? come now - i'm sure it can be explained. 3.95-41 is anticipating a harvard invite is what i read, which may not be too farfetched based on her bare-all name ;).
 
hmm, yeah. I assumed the 'Harvard ???' referred to her not having heard from Harvard yet.
