Interview Nightmares: How to end health disparities question

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There, right there, "interested in pursuing and MD/PhD." That's what I was curious about.

Thank you. Finally.
Ahhhhhh yes, but that answer doesn't tell you how far along I am on in THAT path. Now how could I have started along THAT path without submitting an AMCAS application last year? Well, that's where knowing that there's more than one way to enter a buliding comes in. And if your goal is to get IN the buliding, then you tend not to care HOW you got in!😉

Sorry, lost interest.

Sorry, lost interest.
As a resident in the premed thread, you SHOULD have lost interest 7 years ago! But your question was first answered a few posts ago. You just didn't "get" it.
Ummm........ this year I've been EVERYTHING but a post doc. Next year I'll again be EVERYTHING again but a post doc. From there until I graduate, I'll be an MD/PhD student. I don't expect to be a post doc until the year 2016 but perhaps I'll see you on my next trip to a USCAP meeting!😉.

More like 5, but who's counting?

Your "answer" was ambiguous so I sought clarification. I won't make that mistake again.

For anyone who's interested, here's the NIH website for the Center for Health Disparities Research:
http://ncmhd.nih.gov/

Enjoy!!!😀

And it's too bad the ignore function doesn't work for advisors.😕

And when I read MOST of your posts, I wanna grab my husband's Glock.🙄

People like you don't care about ANYONE or ANYTHING until if affects YOU. So OK, you don't care if the inner city baby that can't afford, or whose parents aren't educated enough to be aware of, or whose parents simply don't give a dam about their kid getting a small pox vaccination. No, you don't give a dam until the terrorist of the world come up with a way to weaponize small pox, drop a little "something, something" in Durham,NC. Then that the dirty little black baby, with the ignorant, crack smoking parents who sit around all day eating high cholesterol welfare cheese sandwiches and watching Fresh Prince, ends up at the DUKE ER scratching, touching, and slobering as babies do, on everything including the toy that YOUR baby, who was already there for treatment of his croup, just put into his mouth.

THAT's when people like you start to care about health disparities.

Do you know anyone born in the last 25 years who got a small pox vaccination (excluding members of the military, I have no knowledge there). And why exactly would anyone need to weaponize a virus that is already quite contagious and which natural immunity has been greatly diminished in the general population since it's not around anymore. And how would the virus be spread to his child by virus deposits on the teddy bear AFTER his child played with it?

Short version of this post: Huh?

Wrong, big time. 50 years ago african american marriage rates were much higher than now. Something else has recently torn families apart, and it wasn't racism or slavery.

It's the rap music. Duh.

Double huh????? Three suggestions. 1) Have a baby 2) Infectious Disease Epidemiology and 3) Bioterrorism. Google it and educate yourself!😉

BTW, why would anyone fly an airplane into a supertall building? 😕

It's quite odd, isn't it?

You: Hey 1Path, when is your birthday?

1Path: I was born in a MONTH when the wind blew very hard. "Get" it? There's more than one way to feed grandma bacon in the bathtub!

Here is a well thought out post with several good questions which 1Path, in typical fashion, can't answer...so her response is, "educate yourself". Great🙄

So I'll make a go of it.
1. They don't vac against small pox anymore, unless you're in the military or have some other high risk job. So 1path was once again pulling some lame example out of her ass to nicely demonstrate...once again...that she doesn't know what she's talking about.
2. They wouldn't they would just need to release it.
3. Despite the obvious time-line flaw, they don't pass around teddybears from one sick kid to another.

I'm just hoping that when I finish my PhD, I don't age as much as you have nor become as bitter!

FYI, the reason I don't answer many questions around here is because 1) I don't owe anyone here an explination of jack **** and 2) One those occasions when I have waste dmy time answering a question directly, it was a COMPLETE waste of time with the common SDN war cry of "proove it proove it", "show me stats", :barf: ect . And 3) Anyone with half a brain could figure out what the he!! I'm talking about most of the time about if they would simply stop reading my posts from the perspective of coming from a black woman (which I actually don't think applies so much to people like Panda Bear) and just read the dam posts!

Oh now I won't criticise your posts for lack of ingenuity, it is expected.😴

No offense intended, but don't you think you're counting your chickens a little bit before they hatch? (Say nine or ten years). MD/PhD programs are very competitive and there are plenty of great applicants who never get in. It's one thing to flaunt something you have, it's another to keep bringing up something you haven't even been accepted to begin yet (unless I'm missing something). Kinda like Guido Carlisle flaunting his major record deal and 8 platinum albums. Wait, who the heck is Guido Carlisle? ..... Exactly....

All the best to you, really, and I hope you get in - but you might want to wait until you have that MD/PhD in hand before you use it again in a discussion. Just my humble advice.

Final comment and I'm going to leave this alone. Blessedly for me, I've got folks behind me 100% who not only believe in my goals but are helping me get there too. And strangely enough, those faces of support and encouragement look a LOT like most of yours (yep, white dudes)without all the jealously and meanspiritedness. Now I realize my strong personality and goals are problematic for a lot of you because when you think of a black woman you're probably thinking of someone shackin' their a$$ in a 50 cent video and not an MD/PhD. Well that's YOUR problem, not mine.

Now does anyone have a problem with getting this thread back on track??? If anyone else would like to address me, send me a PM and let's not continue to bore the readers of this thread with this continued nonsense.👍

You know, ignorance should be a crime.🙄
The Soviet Union weaponized tons of smallpox viruses, according to DoD officials. "There is no intelligence that talks about an imminent threat of a biological weapon involving smallpox, but because of the nature of that agent and what it could do, we knew we had to come up with a national strategy," said Homeland Security Advisor Tom Ridge.!

I googled the first one and I must say, I'm having trouble recovering. You have to do WHAT to have a baby???? My mom and dad sure never did that! I'm too scared of this gawl durn edumacation to google the other 2, I'll just go on out and tip some cows, try to get those horrible horrible images out of my head! I mean, the truth about the stork wasn't even on the first page of results!!!!!

OH THIS IS PRICELESS!

It starts with..."the soviet union weaponized tons of smallpox viruses, according to DoD"

and then to back it up quotes:

"There is no intelligence that talks about an imminent threat of a biological weapon involving smallpox"

Awsome! I bet you suck at those multiple choice questions where it says..."which of these answers is NOT..."
Go google the word "No" and let me know what it means. Or better yet, I'll use "no intelligence" in a sentance so you can see an example: 1Path has demonstrated "no intelligence" in this thread.

see?

I bet not a person jumping on the "lets jump on path1" bandwagon in this thread is over 5'7" tall(which makes you SHORTER than me). And we ALL
KNOW what that means!

First I'm told health disparities don't exist. The next thing you lack of 401K's are going to tell me is that Bioterrorism as a threat doesn't exist either.

I have no doubt that that comes from a legit source, but really, what does that mean? They put the smallpox into spray bottles to squirt on people? That crap's so contagious already, what sort of 'weaponizing' is really necessary? I mean, really, Europeans landed in Hispaniola and a decade later the entire native population was DEAD, it obviously doesn't need that much help spreading and killing. But since you say you have a background in infectious disease, maybe you can educate me.

Well I personally am 6 feet tall, but hey....

By the way, I really admire the way you've taken this thread away from being personal and back on topic as per your earlier suggestion. Great job!

Quite frankly, I'm confused by what you're trying to get across in most of what you're saying, and that was certainly before you informed us about your race or sex.... so unless there's some sort of magical 'racial 6th sense' that would let me know what color your skin is based solely on your internet postings, I guess I was reading your posts from the perspective of coming from a human being. Is everyone who disagrees with you racist? I've never mentioned by ethnicity on this board (I don't think...) so how do you even know if I'm white, black, yellow, or purple?

Ding, ding, ding, I think we have a horse jockey in our midst!

don't get all upset. Just take a deep breath try to regain your composure and present a valid counterpoint. This is good training for you.

What it means is that we're in a world of trouble if someone decides to use it. (although I've had a small pox vaccine due prior research expereinces, it may or may not be effective against the forms folks think have been weaponized)

Ironically, the response to my mention of weaponized smallpox reminds of what I heard about the reactions of some of the feds when someone mentioned to them years before that terrorist were thinking about using airplanes as bombs. I'm sure it wasn't very "ridiculous" or "funny" on Septemebr,11, 2001 though.🙁

Are you even reading my entire posts? I'm not saying smallpox wouldn't be a useful bioweapon, I'm saying that it doesn't NEED weaponization because it's ALREADY virulent enough to use as a weapon on it's own.

I had forgotten how much fun pre-allo can be! When I fail my biochem exam tomorrow, I'll have to be sure to blame this thread 🙂

Let me try a 1Path response to this:

Can you even read Jockey? Smallpox is deadly and no one was laughing when Hitler killed the jews. He was white you know and when I get my MD/PHD smallpox will be the least of my worries. Im black.

Hey 1Path:

Impressed by your toughness and tenacity.

The world is an unjust place, medicine is no exception. There are healthcare disparities, but it's a complex problem far above my mental capacity.

Since you have professed your dedication to this cause, what's your plan?

Also how would a career as a pathologist, separated from living patients, serve the goal of ending healthcare disparities?

Actually, there a more than a few studies that do control for income. And as much as people would like to be politically correct and not hurt the feelings of any racial group, we've run of of viable reasons why health disparities exists....................................................except one.

Bling, bling?

If 1Path doesn't get into an MD/PhD program I'll be absolutely blown away. I mean, with the inpenetrable circular debating skills, the exotic vocabulary, and the unabashed over-confidence she'll be untouchable.

I can see it now:
- INTERVIEWER: How do you think you can contribute to health inequities?
- 1Path: As a BLACK woman I understand the level of racial discrimination that goes on within the walls of the average white physicians practice, and when your school awards me an MD/PhD I'll be able to serve my people better.
- INTERVIEWER: 😕 😕

Panda Bear asks 1Path to explain how caring helps anyone (note: race was never mentioned), she responds:

Here's a an example. A Black woman who already has 3 kids comes into the office complaing of painful periods. I find out from radiology that large fibroids are her problem.
My solution: Myomectomy if possible, UFE if she's already done with childbearing. Save the uterus at all costs for a number of reasons which I don't have time to elaborate on here.

Your solution: Hysterectomy ASAP. We dont' need to take a chance adding another mouth to feed to the welfare rolls!

The problem with your solution. The woman is only 35 years old, college educated, and wants to have another child WITH HER HUSBAND OF 10 YEARS. But because of your ingrained prejudices/stereotypes of black people, you don't even consider what HER unique circumstances may be because you can't see beyond her race. And this affects your ability to practice medicine in a way that is best for your patient which unfortunately happens many, many times a day.

What you and people who think like you call "care", I call professionalism and it's pretty clear that many docs lack anything that closely resembles that.
And I think they should reinstate you back into the Marines and send you to Iraq!😉
And, be sure to bring a copy of this to all of your interviews to show how you "care" 👍

I'm just hoping that when I finish my PhD, I don't age as much as you have nor become as bitter!

Bitter?

That's perfectly fine. You could have just stated that at the outset instead of getting all huffy and incoherent.

Okay, allow me to rehash. I asked you if you were premed, med, grad, postdoc or other. You said that this year you had been premed, med, grad, and other. The best explanation I had is that you'd been a grad student who applied to med school and matriculated this year. I'm still not sure how the "other" fits in, or if my scenario is accurate.

But then you said that next year you would again be premed, med, grad and other. I'm just not sure how one comes to be a medical student and then later reverts to being premed again.

Impressed by your toughness and tenacity.
Thanks a bunch!😀

I agree except I doubt they are above your mental capacity.😉
Since you have professed your dedication to this cause, what's your plan?

Good question. While I'm definitely making a B-line toward pathology, I'm also planning to combine those clinical duties with a research career either in academia or with the feds. This doesn't appear to be which much of an issue in terms of balancing the two from what I've seen working extensively with pathologists that do research.

The only question is which disease processes I will focus on and I'm more than likely going to return to cancer research (the health disparities are enormous). But I also have a strong interest in biological and chemical terrorism (anthrax detection and neuropharmacology of common dual-use chemicals). Of course, this has more of a public health slant which by definition is geared toward serving the underserved.
