What are your favorite books on:
- Bioethics
- Health care

I'm looking for such books to have some idea on how to answer questions like "What do you think of HMOs," or, "How do you feel about patient assisted suicide," etc.

Thanks.

There was a thread a while back entitled "American Health Care System" that had some good book recs. Do a search for it.

Thanks. What about bioethics, anything good?

Maybe it was just my luck, but no interviewer ever asked me a single question about health care policy or ethics at any of the 10 schools where I interviewed. While it's a good idea to be informed and be able to clearly articulate yourself, I wouldn't go to the trouble of reading books just for this reason.

i think that everybody should read a book called "Dying Well" by Ira Byock, also, the "Tibetan book of living and dying" has a lot of practical and beautiful advice.

any of Kubler-ross' books are good.

i just bougth a book called "Health of Nations: An international perspective on u.s. health care reform" by Laurene Graig, pretty expesive though, cost me $62, so i would check and see if it is in a local library, the third edition is from 1999.

there are also a lot of articles on assisted suicide all over the place, a search in a local library will probably yield quite a bit of info.

just be creative in what you want to learn about and do a search, tons of books and articles are out there.

also, i read a study on the amount of residency hours and the physical and mental problems that it is causing residents.

good stuff to have as not just a background for intervies, but also as any prospective doc. 😀

For bioethics, there's a really easy book to read called "Moral Matters." I can't remember the author, but the book is a collection of articles written about different bioethics topics -- all the "chapters" are about 4 pages or less and make you think. As for health care, I have not found one that is really good yet, I think the web is probably your best bet. Good luck!

I think there will be a number of interviewers asking us what we think of Stem Cell Research and human cloning.
Why?
1. It is medicine in the news today.
2. It is controversal and if you're not careful you can give your opinion and then waver when your interviewer disagrees with you.

Whatever the topics give your opinion and stick to it.

That's definitely true. When I applied to med school, it was the year Kevorkian was all over the news, and almost every single one of my interviewers asked me about euthanasia.

The topics Amy Beth mentioned will likely be some of the most popular medical ethics questions in interviews this year, mostly because of their recent publicity and controversial nature.

I agree with the posts above. At my first interview this weekend, I was asked BOTH about stem cells and human cloning ethics.
