Silly question probably, but on your interview day, does it matter who they match you up with for an interview? Say if you interview with the program director or the chair of medicine versus with some random assistant prof? Is it an indicator at all of how interested the program is with you?

I ask because I actually got one less interviewer than everyone else on one of my interviews and it was with a random faculty member.

I think it could be due to scheduling issues but it could be due to the interest of the program. That's just my opinion.
If I am the PD of the program, I would want to meet the ones I am really interested in. But, that's just my thoughts.

Well, at this place, everyone gets a pd interview plus other interviewers. I just got one less than other applicants.

The following is anecdotal evidence.

At the two "safety" interviews I've been on thus far I interviewed with the program director at one and the chair of medicine at the other. I haven't had any other interviews with program directors or chairs of medicine. (I have interviewed with associate PDs and vice CoMs).

At one of the "reach" programs I interviewed with two random fellows in subspecialties I have no interest in whatsoever. I haven't interviewed with any other fellows. This was very disheartening.

I interviewed at my #1 place today and the PD interviewed about 1/3rd of the applicants and I wasn't one of them. He practically spent NO time whatsoever interacting with the rest of us individually, just addressed us in a group. I don't know what to make of this :scared:..

PDs are obviously the most important, but I would imagine that if you don't interview with the PD, then you will probably interview with one of the associate PDs, which is as good? I'm sure they have a good amount of input.
I also interviewed at my #1 with the associate PD instead of PD, but I didn't think this was a negative.

Medicine has probably the largest interview day of any specialty. And the most. Because we are usually the bigger programs. Personally, there is so much **** going on each week after week that our PD does not have the time nor the opportunity to select which one's he personally wants to interview.

He's chosen which people make the cut and would be happy having on our team. Interviews are set up at random, or, sometimes, by people with similar interests or experiences (I interviewed with a dude who couples matched with a girl in the same city, different residency, different specialty, as I was).

It may feel better to have the Chair, the PD, or even the Chief of Medicine as your interviewer, but it really doesn't matter.
