a couple months ago at the start of the interview season i interviewed for a categorical spot for gen surg at a place that i will most likely be ranking #1.

would i be decreasing my chance of matching categorical at this program if i ask them to rank me also for a prelim spot? the reason being is that if i don't match categorical at this program or at another program i want to do a prelim year at this program rather than scramble for prelim somewhere else.

I applied to both as well, thinking that it would double my chances of staying in a specific city. I was told in an interview that it looks confusing to apply to both, as it looks like I'm applying to gen surg and something else like anesthesia and was asked to clarify. I was asked about it at multiple interviews and was able to easily clarify the situation, but was told that programs will only be considering me as a categorical and won't rank me on two lists. The programs will only rank prelims that are applying to something else and not gen surg. But maybe that was just school specific.
