Interviewer's assurance that I would get in - What does it mean?

I had an interview yesterday with 2 faculty members at the school. Well, the first interview was okay. I couldn't gauge his feelings about me. But the second one went really well and he told me that basically I shouldn't worry and that I would get in and that he would highly reccommend me. He said to not worry about it at all and that he would get me into the school. What are people's experiences with this type of statement? I am thinking that there is still a chance that I might not get in...You never know until you have the acceptance letter.!

My interviewer pretty much said the same thing last year. He told me that he thought I was a very good applicant and "that's how he would present it to the committee". I got in the following week. Sounds like good news to me! Good luck.

I had a dean of a school say basically the same thing to me ("I can't make you any promises, but I would venture to say that when we get the joint accept list in March, where we find out where else our accepted students have been accepted, you'll be accepted to all the schools you applied to") This statement has already been proven false by 1 rejection and 6 still-waiting-to-hear-somethings, so I'm of a slightly dubious mindset... The school isn't rolling, so I guess I have to wait two more months to find out what it means.

Yeah, my school has pre-determined dates where you call in to find your status. It just so happened that my interview was 9 days before the first call-in date. I tell ya, that was a crappy 9-day stretch there.

I think your interviewers can really go to bat for you and increase your chances of getting in, but the one guy I knew that had that happen (was basically told he had an acceptance) ended up with a rejection. He was really pissed. Take it as a good sign, but try not to get too hung up on it. Good luck!

This is the way I think of it: each school has a set number of interviewers, and they meet regularly to advocate for the students that stood out to them. If you stand out in your interviewer's mind, then that interviewer should have no problem persuading a group of people who know nothing else about you than your numbers to grant you an admission. I think the interview is pretty much the crux of the admissions process and I think you might be underestimating, like I did, how many people don't come off as well as they would like to. Obviously, you impressed this person and, come adcom meeting time, that's probably all they're going to remember. So, unless they are vindictive bastards, you should be all set. Good luck.

Sounds good. However not all interviewers are actually on the voting committee -- many just rate you numerically and submit comments to the adcom.

I hope it's good news for you, but it depends on how that particular school does admissions. The Dean of Admissions at Vandy told me not to worry, and I got waitlisted.

i actually had 2 schools (at top 20 schools) where my interviewers wrote me emails/letters afterwards telling me how much they enjoyed our conversation and how they wanted me to attend. my interviews were in early jan. i don't expect to hear for awhile, but i am not counting on getting automatically accepted. interviewers are only a smart part of the committee. they may be able to sway people's votes, but i think you can still be rejected on other factors. we'll see...

My interviewer at one school started off by saying that every student he knows from my undergrad (the nearby Ivy) did exceptionally well there, and that he thought I would too. Three weeks later the rejection letter came. I hope the results are better for the OP!

I don't want to stomp on anyone's parade, but got the same feedback from one of my interviews and was rejected outright. No waitlist, no nothing.

Although I would consider it a positive sign, I wouldn't get too excited about it until you get the thick envelope. Sometimes interviewers say things at the end of the interview, simply because they don't know what to say.

That said, positive feedback from you interviewer is definitely better than negative or neutral feedback.

In one interview two years ago, I was told I would definitely get in and my problem would be to choose among all the schools that accepted me. I just got waitlisted.

This year I have been told the same thing at a recent interview, but until I get it in paper, I am not believing anything, so do not slack after such phrases.

My interviewer said the same thing after my interview at Albany. Two weeks later, I got waitlisted there 😕

One of my interviewers told me not to worry, that I would make a great doctor and would definitely get in somewhere (I was not acting worried during the interview or had low self-esteem or anything like that). I haven't heard form this schools yet (Texas match, 10 more days!) but I don't think it means anything more than he liked me as an applicant. I will be overjoyed if I get accepted, but really these comments mean nothing until you get accepted.

The Associate Dean of Admissions (interview #3) told me I would make a good student at their school. I was accepted about a week later. 👍

It means he likes you and he is going to bat for you. But these things are decided by committee. Interviewers (unless they are the dean and ready to throw their weight around) should refrain from saying stuff like that. Guys do it sometimes as a power trip or like another said because they like you and don't know what else to say.

I had an interviewer tell me the same thing. She ended the interview by saying, "I think you are a great fit and do well here.I am part of the admissions committe and unless god thinks otherwise, I'll see you next year." (not a religiously affiliated school. She went through this thing saying that in theis process only god was above the admissions committee...)


I was actually very skeptical and took her comment with a grain of salt. But I got in a few weeks later. 😀

I've had this happen at 4 schools...so far I've been waitlisted at 2, accepted at 1, and haven't heard from the fourth.

My own opinion is that its definately a good sign...but you're not home free...I would have said it would have garunteed you at least a waitlist...but after reading some of the comments in this thread, you could even be rejected.

But don't think about that! Its a good sign, be confident and everything will work out!! 👍

I was told by one interviewer that he didn't see any reason I shouldn't get in, and that he would argue on my behalf at the admissions committee meeting. A month and a half later I got an acceptance letter. I'd say it's not a guarantee but it's one heck of a good sign.

The only place I got a, "well I'm not in a position to tell you this definitively but"-speach I got an acceptance to (waitlists at all the others). I got happy vibes from the regional interviewer for duke but I really don't think that means anything in particular.

I had two interviewers at one school. One said, "I think you'll definitely get in." The other said, "I would love to see you here next year." I got waitlisted and withdrew. Pppfffftttttt.
