I have a phone interview with a major hospital system for a patient care tech job (woohoo!). I know that the questions are known to be behavioral based (tell me about a time when...) but if they ask me about my future plans, they wouldn't look down on the fact that I plan on going to medical school, do they? I know some people who work in this position at the hospital and are all pre-nursing or in nursing school. Would being pre-medical put me at a disadvantage since it's mainly a "nursing" position. It seems like kind of a silly question but I figured I would ask.

Absolutely not..I have been working as a Patient Care Tech in the ICU for approx. two years now and when they asked me, " What were your plans for the future?" I simply answered that I was hoping to apply to medical school and become a doctor. I think they mainly want to see that you have goals in your life and that you aspire to do better.
Besides, a job is a job.

No need to worry. I've worked as a PCA at a campus hospital in the ER for the past six months, and from what I've experienced, it's typical that such jobs have have a relatively high turnover rate as most PCAs are students in some capacity. As long as you plan on holding the job for a reasonable amount of time it shouldn't be an issue (I wasn't even asked to disclose my future plans until after I was offered a position). In my experience, the rest of the staff is very appreciative that a hopeful physician is taking the time to familiarize himself/herself with "the other side" of patient care. For me, it's been a wonderful experience that I believe will help me to be much more appreciative of/cohesive with fellow staff members when I begin practicing as a physician.

As far as the phone interview goes, mine was very situational: Describe a time where you experienced a conflict with a coworker/customer and explain how you reacted, describe a time where you went above and beyond what was expected of you, etc.

Best of luck in your interview!
