If you want snow and cold, check out Michigan. It's cold as a witch's tit for 7 months here.

Beth Israel and NYU today! Any comments on these programs?

Is it just me or is the thought of the logistics of going on interviews a total nightmare! I'm staying East coast, and hopefully can drive to most. Anybody else have any experience with the long haul drives? Any recommendations for cheap ass hotels?

Hostelling International had flitted across my mind at one point.

But I'll hafta get an interview first!

Aside from the ubiquitous Motel 6, there's the Choice Hotels group. They have a (free) membership program to earn nights at their hotels. See below.

http://www2.choicehotels.com/ires/en-US/html/FallPromo?sid=GlAN.24$5qlvJgg.2

I plan to sleep in mah car. I will bring a suit and a large can of deodorant.

All three of the residency programs I have set up interview dates with have offered a free night in a hotel.

Most of my interviews will be 800+ miles away. I plan on taking two months of vacation time to drive around the US. . . .

Or maybe I will just whip out the credit card and fly.

UT San Antonio by snail mail today. . . 🙂

Great programs! Did ERAS uploaded your LORs before you got interview calls? I am still waiting for uploading before start applying for the rest of programs. Any suggestion?

I am sticking to the east coast, too. Mind sharing your applying list?

i got an invite from yale today via email.

since i haven't posted yet: i'm applying to 20 programs, most in nyc, boston area, chicago, and california. i sent in my eras app on sept 2 with 2/3 letters currently uploaded, no transcript yet, and my personal statement is still not done (arg).

i also got an invite (my first) on friday via email from nyu. i heard from usc and mount sinai today via email saying they needed dean's letters before they were going to ask me to interview.

i'm on an easy rotation right now, allowing me to check email far too often...

congrats to all of you who got interviews. i just got my first invite today via email from hopkins...as of today, i only have 1 of 4 letters uploaded onto ERAS.

oops, in my above post, cedars-sinai was one of the places that needs a dean's letter, not mount sinai. my bad.

First invite. I hear its a great program, but I also hear it's cold! They are offering $300 for travel and a free night in a hotel.

Just got an invite from Brigham by email. I guess it pays to check email and ERAS daily.

Grrrrrh. As the token Canadian/FMG, my interview census is still at a big fat
o.gif

Just kidding - I am actually still unperturbed 😉

Good to see that the big fish are biting!

Invite #2. I'm doing a jig!

Emory today too. Also ECU.

I know Emory is supposed to be a good program. I've never heard of anything at all (good or bad) about ECU (East Carolina University). I know it's a small program with few fellowships, but that's about it.

The incessant cricket chirping subsided briefly today, long enough to get offers from Yale and Emory. Time to get Jaegermeistered.

Okay, now I'm getting worried. I know I've gotten a couple interviews, but it seems that multiple people on here are getting offers from programs I applied to but haven't heard from. This means I missed the "first pass". They looked at my application and dismissed it as unworthy. No rejections yet at least.

Stormjen don't worry about it. That happened to me and others last year. It seemed pretty random at times. Some programs have different schedules for MSTP (MD/PhD) candidates than they do for MD candidates for some reason. That might be part of it. A rumor I have heard is that some programs have different people review applications, and some simply do it quicker.

But just because a program offers someone else an interview before they do you doesn't mean you aren't going to get one. It can be frustrating but don't get clutched about it.

Of course, there is always the possibility that they are simply looking for someone better. 😉

On a side note though, many programs do not send out rejection letters, from what I have gathered. They simply do not respond. Now, if I ran a program I would have the courtesy to let people know either way, but they do get a lot of applicants, and they may be hanging on to applications to see what their numbers of applicants are and if they need to add people to the interview schedule at a later date.

Yaaargh...(followed by sound of gnashing teeth). I'm getting really worried! 😡

I haven't heard from any programs yet, but I'm hoping that some of that is due to the fact that my Dean's office hasn't sent anything in and only one of my LORs is in. So basically I have a PS, my application, my USMLE transcript, and a single LOR.

How much stuff do you people with say 2/3 interviews or more have in ERAS?

Also JHU is the only one I've seen from my list that people here are getting interview offers from. Are west coast schools generally later?

I dunno if this offers any insight but I got 3 of 4 interviews after 3 of my 4 letters got uploaded (yesterday i had 1 letter, today 3). Maybe they read the letters fast. From what I can tell it seems like I got my interviews after my letters got uploaded. Several days ago when I had absolutely no letters uploaded, I had no invites at all.

I don't think I have the perfect application by any means. My pre-clinical grades are decent and my clinical grades suck.

I received one invite yesterday! I think people need to settle down a little...it is still so early in the process. I would imagine that most who have gotten invites already either applied on sep 2nd or are such exceptional candidates that there is no real discussion on whether or not the candidate should receive an interview...(I fit into neither of those categories 😀 ) For the average Joe Six-Pack out there who recently submitted their eras dont worry, the invites will come...

I doubt that's merely a rumor. Having worked in a Department of Pathology for six years, I can attest to the fact that coordinating faculty activities is like milking cats, or trying to get six mules to urinate simultaneously. The sooner we all accept that there is only miniscule rhyme or reason to this process, the better off we will be.

Good luck everyone! I hope to see y'all out on the trail. Especially you, Stormjen. 😉

Are YOU an ADTS addict? I just checked out the ERAS Addicts Anonymous thread under General Residency Issues...whoever created that thread is creative and brilliant!

Applied to 10...6 really...
UCLA
Hopkins
Beth Isreal
GW
Georgetown

Have only heard from Beth...the waiting continues..

i got an interview from cedars-sinai by email today, even though i hadn't sent them any of the stuff they had asked me to send.

this whole interview process seems very random--i can't decide if it's better to be checking where people have gotten interviews or posting where i have and haven't heard from or if that just makes the stress level higher. but, it's nice to have a forum where we can expound on our personal and communal frustration with this process.

my school doesn't even have a dedicated ERAS/residency person right now, making the whole process a little more hairy than it already is. arg. hang in there, everyone.

University of Minnesota! By phone! I am absolutely thrilled!

Woo-hoo! 😛

I wouldn't fuss over getting interviews yet. Getting the interviews has no rhyme or reason to it. Some programs interview everyone that applies, and others have some formula. But, I don't think timing has much to do with it. Alot of people still haven't even filled out there ERAS by now I'm sure. The most stressful part of this process is weeding through all of the fluff these programs give you on the interview trail. Who to believe, who not to? One of my classmates last year flew back to a program for a second look, they paid for the flight and hotel, and she didn't match there. Go figure!

Utah by email today

I got Utah today too! So far I have Yale, Iowa, and Utah. I don't expect much more until I get more LOR's in.

Northwestern by email today.

This year's thread is kicking last year's thread in the butt in terms of post speed and numbers. At this time last year it says we were only up to post #23.

Last year at this time I had 3 interviews and the next week or two gave me the majority of them all. Thus, prepare yourselves.

Mahler says:

Hoer auf zu beben! (Cease to tremble)
Bereite dich zu leben! (Prepare yourself to live)

To continue, for completeness' sakes, despite being not quite relevant:

Aufersteh'n, ja, Aufersteh'n wirst du
Mein Herz, in einem Null
Was du geschlagen
zu Gott wird es dich tragen!
-Mahler

You will rise again
My heart, in a moment!
What your heartbeats have beaten
Will carry you to God.
