Hey everyone!

When you are applying to MD/PhD programs do you interview with both the medical school and the MSTP program? Or does the med school have to accept you first and then you are considered for the MSTP program?

I've read that you have to interview twice that's why I was wondering if it was once for the Med school and then once more for the program.

Do you know if it would affect my chances of getting in by any chance if I was doing research at a research institution (like the NIH) during my application year? But won't have a letter from the PI yet because it'd probably only be a month in?

At the vast majority of programs, interviews for MD/PhD consist of an integrated visit with both the MD/PhD program interviews and the medical school interviews.

I think it is essential to be doing productive research doing the application year (in addition to multiple years prior). In my experience the post-bacc program at NIH is viewed quite favorably by PDs.

I've been doing research for most of my undergrad, no publications though and I don't think I will get one honestly unless things pick up.

I might be able to get a position at HHMI through some lucky connections but I don't know how a position at HHMI is viewed compared to the NIH. Do you know what would be a better route?

I would not worry too much about publishing before applying as long as you are doing high-quality research and have some independence. I also wouldn't too much about what institution you do research at. The topic and lab environment are far more important.

I started one independent project but haven't gotten anywhere with it because it was my first lab and I had to read all the literature and learn the techniques during school. Will this have a negative affect on me?
