interviews at CHOP

Does anyone know if CHOP really requires Step II?
I am not taking it until November, so I am kinda worried, b/c their brochure says they need both scores. Help!!!

As a chop resident could not tell you excatly what the up top want, but it would not hurt to take it, but there are those in the program who took it later in the year

Don't know what CHOP's official policy is (I applied, but they didn't interview my ass, and I had already taken step II) but I wouldn't believe the above poster (an AZCOM graduate based on his previous posts). There's no way in hell CHOP interviewed a DO graduate, much less ranked one. Don't get me wrong, ain't nothin' wrong with a DO after your name, in my opinion, but the big boys don't feel that way.

I'd go ahead and take it...it's easier than Step I and if you did well on step I, you shouldn't have any problem with a couple weeks of studying.

Ummm...a friend of mine in my program who is a DO not only was interviewed at CHOP, but was signed to do peds neuro there as a fourth year med student. Therefore, he will be in our program for the first two years, then will go to CHOP for three years of peds neuro. He went to PCOM.

Um, that's kinda a strong statement to make. Do you have proof of that? A grad from my school last year got an interview there...but he opted to stay in So Cal so now he's an intern at Children's LA...sounds like there is a way in hell they will interview a DO grad.😎

Just for the record, I am from PCOM and I rotated at CHOP in Endocrine last year as a third year when the rank list came out and someone from AZCOM did match at CHOP. Rumor has it that there are two PGY 1 DOs in the program, and a few people from my class at PCOM have been invited for interviews this year. So, I guess the "big boys" do feel that way. After all, if my application is just as good as yours, if not better, why shouldn't I be interviewed?

Hmmm, that's not what Dr. Stephen Ludwig told me.

Anyway, the numbers I was told was around 1000 applicants for 37 spots. Forgot to ask how many they interview though

Btw, my DO LOR came from a DO at CHOP (one of the attendings in faculty practice). Anyway, she did her residency at CHOP (DO internship at University Medical Center at Stratford). She was even a chief resident 🙂

As unsatisfying as this may sound, CHOP does not have strict cutoffs--it's about the entire application. The key to getting interviews there and at other "top"programs is having an angle to your application. I personally know of people who have matched at CHOP, Children's Hospital of Boston, and MGH with Step 1 200-210 and grades ranging from excellent to all "C"s. They all had some unique twist to their application.

My stats: Step 1 220 (no Step 2), two "C"s during 1st year with all "A"s 3rd year. I also speak French and Spanish fluently and have traveled to several different countries for mission work and advocacy programs.

For those of you applying in the future, I suggest that you present yourself in a way that stands out.

I received an interview at CHOP, but after thinking really hard about it, decided that Philly would be too far from my family to do residency and didn't go to the interview. Their process seems mysterious to me. I am a student at EVMS. I did not have my Step II scores or 2 LORs in when I received my interview. My Step 1 score: 231. My MI/M2 grades: all "passes" except for 1 "high pass" in anatomy. However, I did receive "Honors" in all of my MIII clerkships. I guess that may have made the difference, but I'm not too sure. I can't think of anything special or a "twist". I have no research or special honors or awards. The moral is to never count yourself out and aim high. I did not realize that I was that competetive a candidate. I believe that they truly are looking for the best candidates and are hopefully not over-impressed by big names, etc.

I just talked to an attending at CHOP involved in the residency program and she said pretty much the same thing. The attending herself had been a resident at CHOP 10 yrs ago and didn't have perfect grades, but sold herself through her interview and the uniqueness of her application (research, activities, etc).

good luck ! I'm not even a med student yet, but I've been talking to some docs I run into about things that are important in med school so I can not stress out over dumb stuff.
