Someone told me today that you don't actually have to interview to rank a prelim program. (I'm applying to general surgery if that makes a difference.) Is this true? I'd like to skip a few interviews if I can!

Sure, why not? When they don't bother to rank YOU, however, don't complain... after all, why WOULD they rank you if they have no idea who you are?

Heck, YOU can rank any program you want, including those who have rejected you. What you should be asking is will a PROGRAM rank you if you deemed them not worthy of your time to bother to interview there. And I'd be hard pressed to find someone to say yes to that.

However, some specific programs have agreements with their prelim years at the same program so that if you rank their prelim under their categorical, you get a spot automatically. George Washington does this.

It's proly not to hard to scarmble into a prelim if you dont match into a prelim...
