I've been invited to interview (“visit”) at Baylor College of Medicine, UT Southwestern and UT Houston. These schools sounded pretty excited about getting me there and are even paying for my plane tickets and 3 nights stay at a hotel. Additionally, they’re even going to provide food for my every meal. Thus being they're spending so much money on myself and other interviewers, this begs the question: Just how close am I to being accepted there?

Would anyone have any personal knowledge form experience about this? Thanks.

From my personal experience, the interview puts you very close to getting accepted. They are just making sure you have thought about what you are applying for and that you have considered your future career. They will also want to know about your research experiences. The only thing I don't like about PhD interviews is that they make you interview with like 5 or 6 faculty members...it gets a little overwhelming to say the least! Since they are paying to fly you in and provide you with hospitality/food/etc they think you are good enough for them on paper...they just want to see you in person. Good luck with your interviews, I'm sure they will be relaxed!!

One other question. I'm a mathematics major with 45+ hours of chemistry/biology elective. At my first interview they lectured me about bioinformatics, however I reallly don'ty have an interest in that area. I wonder if this is what the schools see as worthy enough for visitation. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Could just be a particular strength of their program. Check out what type of research their faculty do and then you'll know.
