I was invited via email to applying to a school's MD/PHD program. I'm wondering how significant this actually is? I wasn't originally going to apply for the joint degree, but since I have been recruited to apply....maybe I should?

It's from a US medical school and I checked it out...seems pretty good. I'm wondering...is this their method of attracting people to spend $100 for the secondary fee?

Congrats, you probably got a decent MCAT score... but this late in the game they prob just want secondary fees. Unless you're a 35+ with significant research experience, well... yeah.

If you weren't dead set on applying MD/PhD beforehand don't do it simply because someone asked you nicely. You REALLY have to want the PhD for the program to be worth it.

Most letters like that are sent out based exclusively on MCAT score. They do not take into account things like the extensive research experience that is absolutely mandatory for MD/PhD acceptance.

So...don't read too much into that letter. If you were not already committed to the MD/PhD path (and especially if your research background is minimal), applying MD/PhD will ultimately be a waste of money for you.
