Iowa

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Awwww.. Brenda just emailed me asking if I got the letter.. I was going to wait a few days before I bothered her again. Shes awesome (or has figured out who I am on here LOL)!!!!!!

That is really sweet!!! I've gotten several calls from Iowa people (students, professors) telling me congrats on my acceptance and to please call if I have any questions. I never answer because I don't get service in my apartment, but I've been meaning to call back and thank them. Anyway, I'm sure it's protocol, but just the fact that it IS protocol says a lot about the school, I think!! I <3 the friendliness!!!

Hey everyone..
My waitlist letter got lost in the mail so Brenda sent me the letter over email. It seems from the letter that more than just the one piece of paper came with it. What did all you alternate people get with your ranking letter? Seems like there is a form Im supposed to fill out to keep my name on the list. Brenda send she would snail mail me another copy of the letter but I have a feeling she forgot...

There was a little blue form on which you could fill out your current/summer contact information enclosed with my waitlist letter. The letter also mentioned that the envelope should contain some information on financial aid, but neither my email copy nor my hard copy actually contained that information. Did anyone get a financial aid sheet?

I don't really know how important that is; I sent the contact information to Brenda via email and I think that was enough!

Awesome.. thanks so much.. Brenda said all the financial aid info was available on the class of 2013 homepage... I did however receive a letter from their financial office after I submitted my FAFSA

Did you? :/ My exceedingly slow snail mail is really making me nervous! I know UGA got my FAFSA; I hope that means ISU did, too.

I feel the same way!! Their openness/friendliness/willingness to help has really rubbed me the right way. ISU is my only acceptance thus far and all of these people reaching out just makes them that much more appealing!!

I was HIGHLY impressed with ISU and Ames during the interview, and that impression is only getting better!

Good luck to everyone on the waitlist! :-D

That's one of the biggest things that struck me about ISU, and Ames in general. Everyone there was so nice...it's like...maybe a little too nice. <3

Just to let you know, I just got accepted to my in-state school, but I'm going to stay on the ISU waitlist and see how things go. *nods*

Congratulations, LadyHitokiri! No matter what, you're going to vet school this year and that's very exciting. 🙂

I haven't heard from my IS yet, but I'm debating what I should do if I do get accepted there (knock on wood). I love ISU and I'm ready to get out of the South, but then there's the great debt debate that always seems to overshadow the personal feelings nonsense. And the fact that if I even make it in off the ISU waitlist, it won't be until May at the earliest. Decisions, decisions... and waiting.

Do you think you'll go choose ISU over your in-state if you get an acceptance call?

It's hard. I really fell in love with ISU when I visited there. But, in reality, I've talked to a lot of people and have gotten a lot of advice over this situation. I am leaning more towards Illinois now. I would like to set up housing and financial situations asap, so most likely I will choose Illinois just because I already know I have been accepted. As sad as it is for me to say this, I will probably choose Illinois (which I love too, don't get me wrong!). I wish we could go to school together though...from what I know, you're a nice person!

Good luck in hearing from UGA! I'm sure it will be good news, and hopefully you'll hear from them soon to prevent more waiting.

Aw, thanks! I'd like to be your classmate, too. And it would be great to learn anatomy with 55 super sweet Iowa residents and 55 friendly wannabe Iowa residents! But I agree... I feel like the education is essentially the same no matter where you go; it's the out-of school experience that makes it slightly different. So the most practical thing to do is try to forget the endless fields of corn and the friendly faces and get the most for your money. As much as I hate to admit that. I was really sad when I left Iowa... but there's always externships and internships and whatnot if you want to spend a little time at ISU.

If I remember correctly, last year UGA sent out letters sometime next week. (I hope that sentence made sense...) I don't think I would mind waiting a little longer, though. I waited all summer last year and they didn't call me; what's a few more months' wait while ISU races through their alternate list? haha. I need to stop dreaming.

By the numbers, I'm pretty sure they will get to you on the waitlist. Dream on! XD Good luck, I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you for UGA. 😉

Yeah, I agree with and can relate to everything you said in that first paragraph though. It's sad to say it, but it's true. Hey, maybe we can intern/extern there at the same summer~!

Thanks, LadyH! That would be awesome to sort of know someone at ISU during an intern/externship! I have a cousin who lives in Madison, WI who would be totally stoked if I were actually close enough to visit for an entire summer. We'll have to keep in touch and see how it works out. 🙂

Just letting all the alternates know... I removed my name from the alternate list today (I was #3 OOS). Good luck everyone!!!

Thanks for letting us know, Taylor! Good luck wherever you go.:luck:

Sounds good. I'm sure I'll stay on SDN, although will most likely post less frequently next year. But yeah, I wanna keep in touch with my friends! XD Even if I've never met them, ha.

Congratulations to everyone who was accepted this year!!! The more I hear about Iowa, the more I think it will be on my short list for applications next year. It seems like a great school in a nice town!

To that end, I am hoping someone might be able to answer a few questions for me... I e-mailed them a few days ago, but haven't heard back yet and am getting anxious (no idea why... not like I need the answers today!).

Anyway, the website says that prerequisites have to be taken within the past 8 years, but exceptions can be made on a case by case basis. Has anybody been successful in getting an exception made?

Second, does human anatomy counts for mammalian anatomy? I mean, I know humans are mammals and all, but... well, just checking.

Finally, it doesn't specify upper level genetics... is this a good assumption that it needs to be, or is that just preferred (like CSU). The class that is the most realistic for me to take this summer is sophomore level... otherwise I will have to take something online.

Thanks!

I can't answer your first question, since I wasn't in that situation, but I can certainly try to answer your other two:

Second, does human anatomy counts for mammalian anatomy? I mean, I know humans are mammals and all, but... well, just checking.

It would depend on the course, I think, as two of the classes listed on the pre-requisite page (Biol 155, Biol 255) are human anatomy courses. I couldn't tell you which they prefer, though. Also: Remember that a physiology course with an emphasis on mammals (i.e. it should be equivalent to Biol 335 or An Sci 214) could be used to fill that pre-req instead of an anatomy course. And, if you've taken more than one course that fits the requirement (such as separate anatomy and physiology courses), they use the course that you earned the highest grade in to calculate your pre-req GPA.

The course descriptions for their Iowa State equivalent courses are:

Biol 155. Human Biology. (3-0) Cr. 3. F.S. A survey course of human biology, including principal structures and functions of the body systems and the diseases and disorders associated with them. Designed to meet general education requirements in natural science. Not recommended for those seeking a career in the allied health professions or for students majoring in life science.

Biol 255. Fundamentals of Human Anatomy. (3-0) Cr. 3. F. Prereq: High School Biology and Chemistry, or Biol 101. An introduction to human anatomy, beginning with cells and tissues, surveying all body systems, relating form to function. Systems covered include: integumentary, bones and joints, muscles, nervous, sensory, endocrine, circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive. Pre-Medical students should consider Biol 351 for their anatomy background. Not intended for major credit in biology.

Biol 335. Principles of Animal Physiology. (3-4) Cr. 5. F.S. Prereq: Biol 314. Introduction to systemic functions with emphasis on mammals. Nonmajor graduate credit.

Biol 351. Comparative Chordate Anatomy. (3-4) Cr. 5. S. Prereq: 212, junior classification. The evolution of chordates as reflected in the anatomy of extinct and living forms. Lecture topics include the history and diversity of chordates; comparisons of anatomic structures among major groups, the adaptive significance of anatomic structures. Laboratory involves dissection of representative species.

B M S 329. Anatomy and Physiology of Domestic Animals. (3-0) Cr. 3. S. Prereq: Biol 212, 212L. Survey of body systems of domestic animals. Provides a medical science orientation particularly useful to students in a preveterinary medicine curriculum.

An S 214. Domestic Animal Physiology. (3-0) Cr. 3. F.S. Prereq: Biol 212, Chem 163 or 177. Introduction to anatomy and physiology of the neural, circulatory, respiratory, immune, endocrine, reproductive, and digestive systems of domestic animals.

Finally, it doesn't specify upper level genetics... is this a good assumption that it needs to be, or is that just preferred (like CSU). The class that is the most realistic for me to take this summer is sophomore level... otherwise I will have to take something online.

The Iowa State equivalent courses are both technically at the sophomore level (i.e. their only pre-req is intro bio, and they're usually taken as a sophomore), so you should be fine as long as the course you're looking into is equivalent to either of those.

Here are those course descriptions:

Biol/Gen 313. Principles of Genetics. (Cross-listed with Biol). (3-0) Cr. 3. F.S. Prereq: Biol 211L and 212L. Introduction to the principles of transmission and molecular genetics of plants, animals, and bacteria. Recombination, structure and replication of DNA, gene expression, cloning, quantitative and population genetics. Credit for graduation will not be allowed for more than one of the following: Gen 260, 313 and 313L, 320, Biol 313 and 313L and Agron 320.

Gen 320. Genetics, Agriculture and Biotechnology. (Cross-listed with Agron). (3-0) Cr. 3. F.S. Prereq: Biol 212. Transmission genetics with an emphasis on applications in agriculture, the structure and expression of the gene, how genes behave in populations and how recombinant DNA technology can be used to improve agriculture. Credit for graduation will not be allowed for more than one of the following: Gen 260, 301, 320, Biol 313 and 313L and Agron 320.

Finally, you should go here if you need to look up any other course equivalencies. Hope that helps!

Thank you cuitlamiztli! You did my homework much better than I did for myself😀!

The class I took was human anatomy and physiology and I think would probably count similarly to their Biol 255. Genetics is a little less clear, but without taking it I think would be similar to their Biol 313.

I'm crossing my fingers that they will get back to me about my old prereqs and be willing to work with me... there is just no way that I can retake everything that is more than 8 years old (physics, gen chem, biology, organic)!

Thanks again! Good luck next year!

Just to chime in, my Equine Anatomy course was not sufficient to fulfull their pre-req's, and they told me that I could either take Human Anat or Comparative Anat. This was specific to my school (the human anat course is a 4000 level course and the comparative 2000) but hopefully that helps reassure you a bit more! 🙂

They accepted me without even mentioning the 8 year rule, and I would say half of my prereqs were taken more than 8 years ago. In fact, I was not even aware that they had taht rule even though I know some schools do. I think it also helped that I have been in the science field (never left). It might matter if your prereqs are older then you graduated and did accounting or something else non biology/chemistry related.

Thank you cuitlamiztli! You did my homework much better than I did for myself😀!

You're welcome! I knew where to look, so I was happy to do so. And good luck next year!

Also, EqSci and Athane--I see that I'll see you both this fall!

did anyone else on the alternate list get an email from brenda today confirming that you were remaining on the alternate list?

😀 Can't wait! I posted in the facebook group, I'm getting a bit over-eager to meet everyone. lol

I would probly check with her then.. She just emailed me again saying thy would start calling people th week of April 20th

But it looks like you are planning on attending UGA.. Are you still waiting to hear from Iowa?

I got that email from Brenda today, too.
I was accepted to UGA, so I am planning on going there. However, I'm paranoid and I like having the ISU backup plan for at least a little longer. I'll probably end up declining an offer of admission if they ever do get to my number (86).

This is exactly how I feel! I'm a few past 100, but figure it'll be interesting to know if I would have ever gotten off the waitlist, and if I do, then when it would happen. Plus I'm paranoid too.

I am a second year student at Iowa. Its a great school, I am really enjoying the experience. Ofcourse it gets stressful at times but I think the faculty and staff are very helpful and if you put enough effort forward you should be fine..Im also posting because I have excellent housing available..and am looking for someone to take over. I've lived here 2 yrs and its super comfy and great, new, clean, big, bedroom and office, some utilities included like heat, water, cable, internet, and theres a garage and pool.. i moved from NJ so i know its hard to find a place.. you can have a cat in the apartment (or 2 i think) but no dogs..thats why im moving..let me know if interested! good luck everyone!😀

Everyone still excited? I'm so pumped! 😀

Has anyone looked into housing yet? I'm probably going to get an apartment, and have only just started going through the housing resources on the Iowa website. Anyone find any good complexes?

Part of me can't wait to start classes, but the other part asks what in the world I'm getting myself into and why on earth I think I'm ready to jump into all that stress. But, yes, I'm still excited 😀

As far as housing--I'm buying a trailer, but I did spend some time looking into apartments while in undergrad and before I made the final trailer decision. So here are my recommendations:

Stay away from any Campustown apartments unless you want to be smack dab in the middle of partying undergrads. Likewise, most of Randall Corporation's apartments are immediately west of main campus so there will be a very high percentage of undergrads living there.

University Plains are nice but it's a rent-by-the-room situation.

I haven't seen any of these, but Wessex and J&L Enterprises both look very nice, K&J Cooper Properties seem decently-priced and most of their complexes are closer to vet med, and Martin Property Management has some decently-priced 2-bedrooms.

I've looked at Haverkamp, Jensen Properties, and Hickory Ridge, and they are all very nice. Hickory Ridge is older than the other two (and is thus slightly less nice) but it is the closest to vet med and I think it's also the cheapest of the three. Haverkamp and Jensen Properties are extremely comparable in space, rent, and also (if I remember correctly) in included utilities/amenities.

Finally, there are plenty of apartments in Nevada (east of Ames), Boone (west of Ames), and in Huxley (south of Ames) if you don't mind a longer drive and want to pay a little less.

I hope that helps! Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

I don't know whether anyone is still waiting for the ISU waitlist to move, but I'm posting to let you guys know that it is moving! I got a call and an email today... I'm going to have to call them back tomorrow and decline their invitation 🙁, but I was originally numba 86. So if you're higher than me on the waitlist and you're still waiting for a spot, keep your phone on you!

I know I'll love UGA, but it's hard not to imagine how different my life would be if I could afford to spend four years at the vet school in the agricultural epicenter of the developed world. Keep dreaming, right? Hopefully by declining their offer, I can make someone else's dream come true!

Oh geez this is too much. I am 6 spots up the list from you!

Thanks for the update :xf::xf::xf:

Good luck Agkistrodon!

Also: Has anyone heard from their sophomore contact yet?

Not me!

Did we have to sign up for that specially? Or is it automatically done?

Automatic, but the site (which seems to be down tonight?) said that we should be hearing from them/getting their contact information in mid-May. So maybe by next week??

I withdrew my acceptance today, so I hope someone on here gets my spot!! I chose to go to Illinois when I was accepted off the waitlist because of their new curriculum.

I got an email yesterday from my sophomore contact as well as an email from Brenda with the contact info for the contact..

Also, I was checking the website and Tablet PC orders are due by May 31. Not sure if everyone saw that....There is a link on the Class of 2013 page with how to go about ordering....

Sorry to hear you won't be joining us in Ames, but best of luck in Illinois!!!

Was anyone able to place the order (or do they just order 1 for each student in the incoming class)? I tried clicking the link on the computer website, but I wasn't given the option to place an order...anyone have ideas?

I placed my order a week or so ago. As far as ideas, did you sign on to the main page? If not, there's a link right below the search bar; that will take you to the "single sign-on for the web" weblogin page (it's the exact same page you see when logging into your ISU webmail). If you are already signed in, try going here. If that link doesn't work, go to College Services > Information Technology > Tablet Order Configuration and you should hopefully be able to order.

Should you miss the deadline, they'll order you a tablet with the basic configuration.

And littlelisa--I'm also sorry you won't be joining us, but GOOD LUCK in Illinois!

Great, I got it, thanks! I wasn't logged in😳

No problem! I had the same issue at first, too 🙂
