Holy crap that thing is sexy!

Anyone planning to buy one? I'm thinking of it. 4 GB flash memory, 14 hours of battery life, all in something thinner than a pencil and smaller than the majority of competitors.

Check it out: www.apple.com/ipodnano

- does not have an fm tuner/fm recorder
- does not have an integrated voice recorder
- does not have an equalizer
- does not play ogg-vorbis, mp4 files
- has an integrated lithium ion battery, which means you gotta send it back to Apple for a battery replacement. You can do it yourself, but you end up voiding the warranty.

Seriously, I'd consider this if it had these items in the unit. For me, I'm looking at the iAudio5 or the iRiver799, because of its reliability, sound quality, and the ability to replace the batteries yourself.

And the size of the iAudio5 and iRiver799?

I suggest the iAudio G3, same chipset as the iAudio5/U2, but it has a larger screen and a joystick interface, which I like.

Yes, size is important to me. Just like with cell phones (but not like with personal anatomy), smaller is better.
size is overrated depending on what you want it for. I'm going to get a smaller cheaper mp3 to workout with and then my main one for music while I'm away from computer to study to.

I want capabilities. I think sometimes people make too much of size for general use. I used ot get made fun of for my big cellphone. But guess what, I never had problems making a call and it took care of me for 2 years. I loved that phone. 🙁

By the way, does anyone even listen to FM radio anymore?

If you want to record lectures, then a regular iPod is for you.

You're screwed if you want AA batts though.
I listen to the radio all the time. I listen to live mixed sets on specific stations, where you're only option is recording them, cause they don't sell them or make them available for download.

I fI wanted to record lectures with your ipod, then I'd have to purchase a griffin accessory, which would cost more dough. Seriously, ipods don't even make the cut for what the Cowon iaudio X5 or the even the "outdated" (and I use the term loosely here) iRiver H320. The quality, battery life, and features of both these units are a sound investment than an ipod.

And I won't be screwed if I use AA batteries. I'll just use recharcheable NiMH batteries.

Thanks for recommending the G3, as I was still deciding between that and iRiver's competitive model the 799 series. Anyways, the battery life on the G3 (of 50 hours on a single AA battery) seems like it would be worth the investment.

I didn't want to go for the I5, because it uses a AAA battery, and those are way more expensive.

I've got a black 4GB and it is hella sexy. Sound quality is like the shuffle: good not great. I think it sounds better than the mini. Bass response is a little lower than sony stuff, meh.
I want make babies with it.

It looks sexy. I'm gonna go to the Apple Store and take a peek at one today... I'm sure I'll end up buying (since I don't need to record lectures, waste AA batteries, or listen to non-XM radio).

How does the black one look in person? I'm tempted to go ahead with the white, just because I like the white iPods. (Am I an iPod racist?)

If it's any consequence, I don't think you're a racist. Easily persuaded by your visceral responses, but not racist. If you said something along the lines of "white is right" I would be forced to reconsider.
I think the black one looks great (and very shiny and I hope the mactel power/ibooks come in black) but fingerprints show up easily. Like really well. Like I'm going to have to stop committing crimes because my fingerprints are all over this. I think it will be a never ending battle to keep it clean but I don't care. No one can deny our love. I will make babies with it. I just dislike the light grey click wheel on the white iPods. It clashes! When I first got an iPod 4 years ago the wheels were white and I really preferred that. Those were the days, back in aught one. But the colour screen is fabulously bright. I never had a colour iPod and I must confess these screens are fantastic.
I don't understand why people want a radio, either. Portable radios can be had for $5. Every radio show I want has a podcast. And replacing the batteries on these is not hard. You can recycle the batteries at any number of outlets, anyway. I'm willing to do it every 2 years; the warranty runs out well before that. And besides, I like to open up my gadgets.

The lack of FM radio on my ipod is a gripe of mine also. Millions of people listen to FM radio everyday. I had an FM radio on my old Creative Labs mp3 player that I bought back in 1998 and used it all the time. Mainly for public radio (NPR) and those dumb morning shows. Radio is always live, whereas podcasts aren't.

Maybe Apple is making a stand with FM much like it did with floppy disk drives many years ago. Now the floppy disk is pretty much obsolete. Perhaps in a few years, FM radio will also be obsolete. Most cars now come with the option for XM or Sirius satellite radio. Some cars are now making this standard.

But not everyone can afford the extra money of having dedicated satellite channels.

I think the biggest drawback for apple is the lack of additional revenue from FM radio integration. Even though they claim they make little money from the iTunes store, with 600 million songs sold, I bet they've made a couple million dollars. With XM, there's a potential for revenue sharing - that's how they've made money with Audible. With accessories which bear the "Made for iPod" stamp, they get money, too. Within iTunes, the podcasting directory is so promiscuous with the rest of the store that I'd be surprised if it did not have a modest effect on iTunes sales. Where do they get money with FM?
The thing about Creative and iRiver is they make no money off music sales and they have no music labels to deal with. They get their revenue from one place: hardware. Frankly, I understand the iPod isn't for everyone (and Apple has always been unapologetic about that within every market); the nice thing is there are other products which will appeal to whatever niche one desires. (Ok, there's no porn tie-ins... yet.)

Yeah, I can't find a setup like that anywhere...

I miss getting NPR but that's the only station on FM that I listened to.
I dont have any sort of ipod or portable radio but where I live now it's difficult to pick up NPR sometimes and then it's usually classical music instead of the talk shows.

That's hilarious. I had read reports about how flimsy the thing felt. People talked about how the plastic made it feel cheap.

Apparently not. It took that much of a lickin' and kept on tickin'? Granted the cosmetics weren't good after the 50 mph car launch, but the thing kept playing? Then it kept playing after being run over by a car? Nice!

KCRW Santa Monica has podcasting for most of its shows and also live netcasting from their website and from iTunes radio. They have three net stations, simulcast of their over the air broadcast, 24 hr music, and 24 hr news.

I just picked up a black 4GB and a white 2GB from my local store this evening. The student discount was a nice help as well ($229 and $179 respectively).
Does the white one pick up scratches readily? After a one hour run with my 4 GB Black Nano in my pocket (nylon shorts, they shouldn't scratch it up, right?) the front was messed up pretty bad - a bunch of little micro scratches. Oh, well, these things happen; it's meant to be used, right?
For anyone considering them, they kick ass. And the black one is just gorgeous. I'm getting a little more than 15 hours battery life on a charge. Just get a overlay film before you use it because it will get messed up.

Does your couch have that thick plastic some people use so that it won't get dirty?

I think the attraction to the nano is its size and no hard drive player (it's all flash based).

The regular iPods have about the same battery life (15 hours) and have an advantage that they can be used as a Firewire hard drive.

I love how they double as a hard drive! I was in an Apple store two hours from my house (I live in the boonies) and my old iBook was being taken in for the Logic Board recall program. I had a few things I hadn't backed up, like the music I'd bought from iTunes, and I just pulled my iPod out of my purse and everything was transferred in a few seconds. It's lightening fast, and so easy. I once backed up over 10 gigs in under a minute.

I don't think I'll ever switch to smaller iPods. I have a 20gig from 2003 that is still going strong, and I use the iTrip to play it in my car, since I don't have a CD player and would rather use the iPod anyway.

I think I would be lost without my Macs.

Memory isn't too much of an issue for me because I only have about 10 Gigs of music on my computer. I have the 4 Gig Mini and it's fine with me. But then again, some people have to have a newer gadget whenever they can. I've always been amazed by those people who get a new cell phone 2-3 times per year. It's just not worth the effort or money to me. My last cell phone lasted 3.5 years. However, I digress....

You're right. I visited the Apple store today and those bad boys are sooo sleek and sexy. ooooooooooo-la-la 😍 😍

I like the nanos a lot, but I'm still getting a regular IPOD.

With an iPod nano would I be able to pick this up? I know nothing about iPods.

Podcasting is programmed radio over the internet. You "subscribe" to Podcasts. As an example, I subscribe to CNN Radio News. Every hour (that my computer is turned on), iTunes will check for updates and download the latest news segment. I can keep as many of them as I want (I currently limit it to 10).

I leave my computer on at night, sync my iPod before leaving for work, and can then listen to the latest CNN Radio News for news headlines while on my way to work.

There are tons of podcasts available. You do not need an iPod to take advantage of these. You can download iTunes for free -- Windows or Mac -- and listen to these on your computer now. Likewise, you can listen to internet radio stations that are programmed into iTunes. However, you cannot listen to these on an iPod.

iTunes is available at www.apple.com/itunes

Ah cool ... that solves the NPR thing since I can listen to streaming NPR from NPR.org for free. Thanks! I still think I NEED an iPod.. but trying to decide between the nano and a regular one. . .

if I get into my top choice for grad school, I'm going to get one.

Then again, if I don't, I'll find an excuse to get it anyway.
