Let me start off with the coordinator of our IPPE rotations at our school is totally inept and clashes with students daily.

I was assigned my hospital IPPE II rotation in a neighborhood that just so happens to be in the top 10 most dangerous neighborhoods in the US. I go to an urban school who's goal is to serve under-served populations. As a 20 something female though, I do not feel safe taking public transit to this location (my only transportation option). I would assume the school thinks this neighborhood is safe since they send students there. Changes in sites are not easy to come by at my school. What do I do?!? I definitely don't want to come off as a brat that doesn't want to serve under-served populations. And before everyone starts railing on me, I've only worked in pharmacies that serve under-served populations (high medicare and medicaid rates) and I have signed a contract for after graduation with a health organization that only serves under served populations. Under served populations are not my issue. Its the fear for my safety that is the issue.

I think my rotations were in the #1 and #3 most dangerous places in the U.S.

Why don't you talk to your future preceptor about how they get there. Clearly they're still alive. Try using Uber or something?

Chicago?Detroit?

go during the day, no evening shift

Is someone else on rotation there with you? Carpool or take mass transit together

Is there a parking garage you can use where renting a car would be worthwhile?

Actually, Uber solves all of these problems

Its pretty simple. You drive in. Park in the official parking lot. You drive home. Nothing is going to happen to you if you do this.

The reason places are crime filled are due to drugs. No crackhead or drug dealer is going to go near the large congregation of rich white people. Security and the po-po actually protect white people. They know that robbing a white person in white people land will probably result in a fast response and jail time. Probably a segment on Dateline NBC in a few months.

Jaywalk across Broad Street on Temple's campus...police are there in 5 seconds. Stab someone underneath the El in Kenso and they might get there in an hour or two. They aren't dumb...they avoid campuses and hospitals.

Your screen name is misleading because I read the "AZ" part as Arizona. AZ only has 2 pharmacy schools and none of which are really considered urban. So, where do you go?

My husband did several rotations in less-than-savory areas of Philly and carried a "Lucille" for any TWD fans out there. He never had any problems 🙂

I used to attach a 16 gauge syringe to a 60 mL syringe and carry it with me after work as a makeshift weapon.

I'd routinely also carry a box cutter in my back pocket...at least I could use that at work legitimately.

suck it up and get used to it. it is time for coddling to disappear. Life can be dangerous if you want to work at a hospital. One of my buddies did his rotation at a psych ward where there were serial killers and rapists. The first advice to the women was not to wear their hair down.

No sympathy. SWOSU students have to do their rotations in either Oklahoma City or Tulsa, both of which were in the news this year as being the top 2 most dangerous cities in America. You really don't know danger until you drive on Robinson St seeing prostitutes trying to wave you down while their pimps are in a nearby car fully armed if you try anything stupid.

lmao is this for real? I just jerry-rigged my sog/sheath using paracord to my belt. 2 oz syringes are tough, that's for sure.

Hey it looked pretty menacing, though you're right a small syringe would have sufficed.

UIC gentrified its surrounding area by using eminent domain. They were able to shut down the housing projects between the two campuses. At the same time, they cleaned up the area south of the east campus. Some people complained about this but most didn't care. I still wouldn't go too far west of the West campus.

There was this one girl in the 2013 class in Touro who was walking on the street and some random bum told her, "you're dead whitey".

I took my car to school and I look Arab so they didn't really bother me. Plus I usually payed one of the homies on the street like $2 to keep an eye out on my car.

Suck it up. And don't be stupid. Be aware of your surroundings and travel there like you've done it a million times. I also work in one of the worst crime areas in the nation. The times people have been mugged / attacked were usually at odd hours. Although some people did get robbed during the day - - usually people not paying attention and carrying ipods /iPhones openly.

If they rob you, just give them your stuff. It's replaceable. Your life is not 🙂

Give em the stuff and attack them with your weapon as soon as they turn their back to you. Incapacitate them and retrieve your property, don't call the cops.

I've worked in a max security prison for 2 years . . .

Attackers sense weakness by the way a person acts. When you are walking, keep your gaze straight ahead, not at the floor. Put your shoulders back, walk confidently and steadily. Keep your back straight, but relaxed, not like you have a steel rod up your ass. Simply by knowing what you are doing (or pretending to), you can ward off a lot of psychos.

Be aware of your surroundings. Without moving your head around constantly (which makes you look nervous), know who is besides you, in front of you, and behind you. How many people are there? Do they have anything in their hands? Are their hands in their pockets? This is situational awareness.

Mace, pepperspray, and stun guns can be great weapons if used correctly. Check your state laws for legality.

Yep. Don't use a knife unless you've practiced with it before. Opening a flip knife in a situation is kinda hard. I carry this karambit knife which is curved and has a switch to open and a hole in the knife to place your index finger for knife security. You don't want someone taking your knife from you.

Beg borrow enough to use safer transportation for this temporay assignment so you an get through it safely.

I always carry a gun with me. One of my worries is that it will print out of my shirt and someone tries to grab it. If I notice someone walking near my on the same side as my gun I will put my back to the wall until they leave. Full confidence and all.

Things are going to get VERY interesting in that area . . . is it true that people in the area were celebrating the deaths of the two police officers? Seems like every other person in that immediate Touro neighborhood is anti-NYPD.

That area is generally anti-NYPD just like most of the ghetto areas in the city. The area where the cops were killed yesterday could be considered ghetto.

I stand alone in a little room next to a safe with $500,000 in narcotics during the middle of the night with no security or weapon...and everyone knows that I'm the only person with the code...and that I'm not armed.
