Yes they can be called medical doctors or physicians.I have a question that may be more about semantics than anything else. As a DO would you consider yourself a medical doctor? I think most people think medical doctor = MD but as far as I know, MD does not stand for medical doctor .it really stands for Doctor of Medicine. So are both DOs and MDs considered medical doctors or should DOs call themselves medical physicians or something similar?
DO-Prestige+OMT= MD
However, the prestige factor is slowly diminishing as DO grads are growing at an exponential rate.
whats even worse is this person has an acceptance to a DO school.Wholly crap the people on these forums get stupider everyday
According to the previous post,
MD= medical doctor, DO= medical doctor thus MD=DO
You said: DO-prestige+OMT= MD
since MD=DO
so, OMT= prestige
didnt think so, fail premed, stop trying to 'reinvent the wheel'
Yes they can be called medical doctors or physicians.
And I'm surprised you applied to WVSOM without being absolutely certain of that.
"This about wraps up our interview here at WVSOM. Before we finish, are there any questions you would like to ask us?"

No. MD is Doctor of Medicine, aka a Medical Doctor or an Allopathic Physician.
DO's are Doctors of Osteopathy, aka Osteopaths, or Osteopathic Physicians.

Please god do not let this turn into a "what should we change DO initials to that would make it less confusing for pts" thread...the universe WILL explode.
Wait guys... There's no 'o' between the 'D' and 'O' of 'DO'. Instead of 'Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine', patients will think it means "Doctor Osteopathic Medicine".
AHHHH GRAMMATICAL ERROR. EVERY PATIENT WILL DIE.
It's not even "Doctor Osteopathic Medicine!" It's Doctor Osteopathic. Proof that DO's don't practice medicine? You guys be the judge.
Everytime somebody bumps this thread an angel loses its wings.
In that case, bump!

You sir are an idiot 🙄
It is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. "Osteopaths" haven't existed in America for nearly a century now. An Osteopath is a professional in the UK and other commonwealth countries similar to an osteopathic physician only because of OMM, which they are limited to. An American DO is a full fledged physician.
Oh silly pre-meds.
By that logic, MD's should be called Medicines.No. MD is Doctor of Medicine, aka a Medical Doctor or an Allopathic Physician.

That seems to be the default argument people fall back on whenever they say something incorrect/ignorant. "Oh, I said something ignorant and you called me out? You must have a chip on your shoulder." Try to go to an MD in family medicine and say "aren't nurse practitioners basically the same, except they go to school less?" and see if they will great you without "an inferiority complex!"I don't see your logic. Don't get so defensive guys, jeeze! Someone would think DOs have an inferiority complex!
How did first year go?Bizzzumppp ....
1. Allopathic medical schools grant the "Doctor of Medicine" degree which is abbreviated MD
2. Osteopathic medical schools grant the "Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine" degree which is abbreviated DO
Neither schools grant "Medical Doctor" degrees ... but both schools grant doctoral degrees in medicine, which means both create "Medical Doctors" or physicians, making DOs medical doctors.
In a more important tangent ... anyone who gives a damn about this has zero perception of the reality of attending medical school, graduating from said institution, landing a residency, or practicing medicine.
Nice to see you around...you've been quiet lately.Bizzzumppp ....

First year went really well. I've tried to stay away from SDN, but it keeps pulling me back. I'll probably make less appearances though as every time I log on I end up reading something new and frustrating or become involved in some 2 day flame war. Nature of the beast I guess.
as you get further into your medical school career, you tend to post here less and less when you realize a lot of the times the questions are repeated and the pre-meds are psyching each other out. Then you realize that you have more things to worry about than getting upset over a posting that makes no sense.

Agreed.
For all premeds out there, it's time for someone to step up and take Jagger's place after he retires from Pre-Osteo.
Well if it's not I sure blew a heck of a lot of time and money for nothing. Oh man, my residency program is not going to be happy when they find out I'm not really a doctor.
