Hey everyone,

I was wondering if it is worth enrolling into another biochemistry course to fulfill the 3 semester unit or 4.5 quarter unit requirement of most dental schools. Presently, I only have 4 quarter units worth of biochemistry because I went to a UC. Although I meet the requirement for my state schools (UCLA+UCSF), I find them very competitive and am unsure if I can even land an interview from them. Currently, I have a total of seven schools that I plan on applying to but am unsure if this is enough. Thoughts?

Note: I also took the majority of my prereqs at a community college so this bars me from applying to a few schools. Thus making my list of potential schools even smaller.

I don't know if there is such thing as half a credit unit. If the conversion formula results in something that is not an integer, I think schools will round up, if anything. So if you really want more options, you may be stuck with having to take another biochemistry course. If you did fairly well in the course you took, then go ahead and take it.

If you want to resolve the fact that you took most of your prereqs at a CC, then you can retake them at a 4 year, or substitute with upper level course work in the same discipline.

According to the ADEA book, most schools will opt to round their biochemistry requirements to 5 units....
The only pros to taking another biochemistry course would be to expand my list of schools. The cons would be having to shell out money/time.

With the rest of your numbers in mind, I don't see this as a deal breaker. To be honest you're gonna learn all the biochem you need for NBDE 1 during dental school. It's nowhere near as complex as the stuff they teach you in undergrad biochem courses.
