is anybody taking Part 1 exam in May/June ?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good morning everybody, hopefully everyone is fired up and studying hard.
I'm continuing w/ my decks for anatomy. I'm actually finding them to be a good review tool. "Review" being the operative word. When I did them initially b/f studying first aid, I didn't like them, but now that I actually know something 😀, they're quite helpful. There is a lot of physio review in this section, which is good too.

I'm finding that it takes me minimum of 2-3 min per card to read it in a way that I understand it (so some can take 15-30 min), can they pack any more info there, also if the font gets any smaller I'm going to need my surgical scopes . So at most I can do about 20 cards per hour. My pile is getting smaller, which makes me VERY happy. But I would definitely like to go over them at least 2more times.

How is everyone else doing?:xf:

hey...

my studies are not going that good, very slow...still stuck wth anatomy..:scared:
not getting tht speed...dnt knw why...those long studyn hours r just nt thr:meanie:

me too! my exam is in 2 wks and i am trying to revise...and my brain is going all over the place except in my books....makes me want to scream!

Too bad your studies are not going too good, but toothfairy your exam is in 2wks, how are you feeling when it comes to your preparation?

similar for me
almost 3 weeks to go and still stuck with anatomy (tooth histology)
i want to start solving exams, review but anatomy is just endless\
anyway, you guys, esp huggies, dont forget to visit forums again once you recieve your grade, hopefully a good one, so that we can benefit from each other and share experiances and results🙂

Same for me ninety, 3wks left, anatomy is killing me, I'm itching to go over microbi/path, and I'm sure I forgot physio/biochem for sure. :meanie:

hey huggies...thanks for the motivation ....will definitely apply rule of 5 from now on.

as for feeling ready, I do feel better than I did last time...I dont understand my lack of motivation. I cant understand if im overconfident or under....I feel like this exam has taken over my LIFE and i am just done with it!!!
I feel like when i keep on reading reading reading I lose touch with the book and start day dreaming....doing questions and actively trying to look up answers works much better for me...which I will start from tuesday.

I also have to say, my mind MOSTLY goes towards thinking about the big vacation im taking to the Bahamas once its over....I dont think I should be thinking about that =/

well I'm done for the day....what isn't done are my anatomy decks:bang:
I have 18 cards left, but can't process anymore info. So will try to finish them tomorrow morning before work...oh, yah I'm working tomorrow.

But I have to say that after reading the decks for anatomy (almost), I feel much better about this section. Still lots to memorize. I get really confused still w/ all the branches (sns/pns/) to different ganglia and what each nerve supplies for somatic/motor:scared:. I get the main ones, but still get lost on some of the detail. :help:

toothfairy, you probably know your staff pretty well now, plus having taken the exam before you know what to focus on. How did you do the first time and what is your goal now?

😴😴

I didnt do too well last time....lets just say between 80 and 85 =/

goal now is 90 or above...i dont feel ready for a 90...but i feel ready for above 85...
gosh i feel burnt out! Im starting to panic now...what to do what to do what to do?!?!?!

hey guys...good luck for your examz...i knw you all would do well aftr putting in so much of hard work....well evn i hv started preparing for part one but im getting double minded wid my decision....as m doing my internship right nw frm india...m not really sure whether i shud take my exam in dec dis yr or shud i prepare for G.R.E 1st and thn go for my steps nxt yr in may...this way i wud hv an option to fall back on if i dnt clear my steps.

hey
u shud take ur xam in dec, i dnt understand why u want to give it later, because if u give ur xam this year by dec, thn next year you can apply fr 2011 session, there are very few universities which have their deadlines till jan. for 2010 intake u need to submit ur application in 2009 by aug/sept/oct.
n wht u can do is, gve part 1 by dec2009, thn part 2 by 2010 july, so tht when u apply u have bth your scores. although for international dentist program nt all schools ask fr part 2, but it gives you better chances, and now that you have time so you can give both the xams before next year admission cycle begins. gre is required for a masters program, nt dds. foreign students need to clear toefl..
im telling all this assuming u r interestd in internation dentist program.
good luck.

huggies..

hey are you planning to apply for a residency program.....fr residency are you suppose to gve part 2 also?
i have seen few schools askn fr part 2.

yes, I want to apply to pedo. From what I know, you have to have part 2 before you start the program, but not necessarily before you apply. So I don't plan to take them until I actually get accepted into a program. Match usually posts results in Jan, and programs don't start until July/Aug, so I would have enough time to prep and "pass".

Anyways I have FINISHED anatomy decks :soexcited:. My gosh, I'm exhausted. They really helped solidify my understanding, but still have to go over them again.
Tomorrow dental anatomy ...oh man, anatomy again:smack:
My back is really sore today...I literally feel like I'm falling apart.
Is anyone else having a hard time falling asleep at night, the reviewing just doesn't stop, I keep thinking about veins and sinuses...luckily I'm not dreaming about it yet:laugh:

well time to get some snoozies.😴

hey goyal D thanx for the input...i want to know another thing 1)when earliest can i apply for my admissions if i take my exam in dec 2009, keeping in mind that my internship in india wud be over by may2010? 2)which one do you suggest is better:the spring session or the fall session?

hey
do u knw on what basis are the raw scores given? no. of correct answers?
like 80/100, does that mean 80 questions correct?

are u an interantional student or u have done ur dds frm here(us or canada)...\
good luck for ur studies and take care of ur health.
i have already started dreaming about nerves and ganglion..., so before i go to sleep i watch smethng funny so that the natomy stays away frm my dreams...

hey

like 80/100, does that mean 80 questions correct?

your raw score is the number of questions you get right, that's why it's called the raw score. If you get 80-85 questions right, that should give you around 89-90 final score. However, not every one writes the same exam, from what i read, and some are more difficult, so you may get a higher score w/ lower raw score. Also it appears that if you answer more of more difficult questions you can get a higher score w/ slightly lower raw score, but I'm not 100% sure about that. It was mentioned here that some doing well on some sections like micorbi or physio/biochem will give a a higher overall score b/c they are more difficult?? Again just speculations. But we've definitely seen one person get 336Q right and get 90, and another person got 339/400 and got an overall score of 89. So there must be some truth to my thinking.

anyways, just study hard. you need to do well, to get a good score, and yes I was trained here in Canada, but want to do residency in US so I have to write the exam like everyone else:d

and now off I go to read Okeson. :hello:
How is everyone else this find morning???

hey thnks a lot huggies! il take care of tht...at the end the main thing it to get maximun no. of questions right:xf:

good luck!

well dental anatomy is not going so well. I'm reading occlusion in Okeson, I feel like my head will explode w/ the heat my neurons are generating while trying to understand all the contacts. :boom:
I used to think that I could understand it all, but now I have come to the conclusion, that under the time constraints of an exam and stress I better devise some diagrams that I can draw during the exam to help me quickly answer questions. This really helped. So far 4 simple easy to remember diagrams help me figure out most of the contacts in CO, and excursions. So I recommend that as an option. Afterall these are easy questions, we should not lose marks here.

I'm having such a hard time focusing today, ...just want:annoyed: to scream.

hey huggies...its not your fault ur having trouble focusing on okeson...the 1st time i read that book it went over my head and I didnt even know what hit me....

you are going to have to read it atleast 2-3 times to REALLY REALLY UNDERSTAND IT....what I did is I skipped some sections ( especially the ones where I read a paragraph and didnt even understand a line) ....and tried to read it as i went along (ie- if i got a q on DA section that i was lik...HUH..i opened okeson and read up on it..i think that is a better approach) but then again,,....i wouldnt know =/

Hello,
I hope all of you are doing great with your studies 🙂

Huggies, don't worry about getting a little bit frustrated with dental anatomy and occlusion ... It happened to me when I started it too. I couldn't believe that I was getting confused with "the easiest" subject in the exam, but I really was... At this moment I already surpass that stage already:xf: (at least I think so... jejjeje) The diagrams were the best tool to understand occlusion, mainly during the different jaw movements. Stick with them and suddenly, the things will become easier every time.
Today I will be studying the Cardiovascular system, I hope I learn a lot 🙂

Have you guys ever used the "First Aid for the Basic Sciences Organ Systems"? How useful do you consider it for your preparation towards the test??

I hope everybody gets a very productive day today !!!

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what diagrams u are talking about, I have a huge problem in answering questions about which cusp contacts what during jaw movements specially the ones where they give a diagram and arrows 😕 I dont seem to understand the movement they are talking about! :scared:

thanks

well, another work day over. I've been a bit sick since yesterday, I hope I'll be back to normal tomorrow. My head just feels sooo clouded, I've been taking ibuprofen all day long, and it's still there.

Dental anatomy is not my favorite, the diagrams are just the ones I found in Okeson, or made myself to help me visualize things. So nothing special. Xactereality, you should be able to find them in any anatomy book that discusses occlusion.

I have 2 more days dedicated to dental anatomy, I should be able to cover it in that time. It doesn't seem as much info as in other section, probably b/c every section we cover, there is something related to dentistry there, so I feel like I've been studying that section for a while.

Anyways, I did another released anatomy exam last night, only managed to do 50Q, but got 45 of them right. So I was really happy, if I could only do that well on the exam:xf: Watch me do the other 50Q and get most of them wrong:laugh:

Well, tomorrow morning I'm going for a big run, to get my day off on the right foot.

GOOD MORNING everyone😀

How are you all, I'm feeling better today, despite the fact that my son woke me up at 4am looking for his "watch". Also my hard palate is covered in vesicles good sign of major stress on my body, at most I get cold sores on my lip once every 5yrs. Luckily I have some antivirals at home...my ear stopped hurting, so now my mouth will start...BUT I'M IN A GREAT MOOD TODAY and won't let that stop me.

Off I go to tackle the dental anatomy😀
How is everyone else? Is anybody else working on dental anatomy?

congrats on finishing anatomy, I think you'll like histo a bit better.

DA is really irritating me, I'm using different sources, and I swear each book says something different...All these lateral excursions are making my head spin:scared: On the exam I'm just going to have to take my sweet time...😀. Tomorrow I'll go over the decks... but overall I'm just really annoyed....
Hope all have a good sleep, I'm done for the day.😴

it is really surprising that you are reading a BOOK for dental anatomy!
i think you stick to decks, they are really good, hope it is not too late!
by the way, since my exam is in less than 3 weeks, i am getting stress symptoms too;(
my right masster is tense which limited my mouth opening (already took a mm relaxant) + oral ulcers!

hope these things will resolve by these 2 wks

hey ninety,

I was wondering, did u take the exam before? I dont feel that the decks are enough in dental anatomy, well, hoenstly I didnt finish them yet, but I have a preblem,..a huge one in occlusal contact questions and I think the decks also lack enough info about TMJ, I could be mistaken though!
another thing, I read ur recommendation in another post regarding practicing the past exams, is there a signifcant amount of repeated questions or what? and do u guys do the very old ones (80's)?

thanks alot

Hi Ninety, I feel your pain, my oral ulcers are better this morning, at least they didn't spread or burst. I'm not reading the books, other than okeson, which I already did, I'm mostly using wheeler to look at diagrams and look up info that looks confusing. I only use decks as my last review, way to consolidate info, I agree that for dental anatomy they are pretty good, though I don't think they're enough. I also think kaplan first aid has lots of mistakes too, that's why I'm using wheeler to confirm the info. I'd hate to lose marks b/c of mistakes in the text.

xactreality, I read here that there aren't A LOT of repeated questions on the exam, some say 5 some say 10, however, there is a lot of "similar" questions, which will require that you understand the info and not just recall the answer. Also old exams give you an idea what material is important and what to focus on. So definitely do as many exams as you have.

Well, off I go to read my decks. Where are you in your reviews ninety?

hello everyone

Is anyone using kaplan first aid..i havnt bought tht buk yet, is it worth getting it?
also is any one using dental decks 2009-2010. I have the old ones, 2006-07, is there much difference in new edition?

i have started doing decks now fr anatomy..planning to get over wth them by sunday🙂

good luck to all!

Huggies, i am reviewing right now with my friend and we finished bio and started physio, doing the 2nd reading with a study partner is extremely helpful because it shows the weakness of each plus it keeps you focused and interested to continue reading (if i was alone, it will take me ages to review this whole material) but where are you in your own review?

xactreality, it is the first attempt for me but i agree with huggies in that nbde takers stated that the didnt see the same 100% identical question but absolutely a question from the same specific area, e.g. in biochem, there was a Q about which amino acids are found in the surface of globular proteins and another question in another exam comaring core and surface of globular proteins! when we searched this info, it was simply that surface of globular proteins is POLAR and core is NONpolar, so 2 different exams testing same specific area=)
this why it is important to search your mistakes in previous exams ans not just memorizing their answers!

goyalD141284 I have kaplan 1st aid and really like it, despite it's mistakes. I also have USMLE first aid, they're all good, but I couldn't have done it w/o kaplan ndbe first aid. I also have the new decks, but have no idea how they compare to older versions. Honestly I don't think it's much...if you have the older version, I wouldn't spend the money on the new one. But it's up to you.

Ninety good for you for studying w/ a partner, I'm like knowing that someone else is studying there along side me, but otherwise prefer to do it on my own.

I just finished DA. I also did one released exam and got 88/100. Should be happy w/ the results, but I lost 6 questions by making really stupid mistakes. I still feel weak in primary teeth, but at least I got every occlusion question right:soexcited: Tomorrow I'm doing released exams for dental anatomy again, and maybe start microbi. again.
Well it's midnight and I'm sooo tired. 😴

Hi everybody, another day of studying. Just did another DA exam, and I just want to scream. Got same score as on the first one, but the mistakes I'm making just kill me...like they'll ask for calcification of a molar and I'll give them time for permanent molar where they're asking for primary, or they'll ask for M contact of a tooth, and I'll give them distal. I know what these answers are, I'm just not reading carefully enough. I missed 7 QUESTIONS like that :bang: Come ON!!!!. I can't miss these easy questions, I need room for areas where I'm really weak ...like microbi.

You have to be soooo careful when doing dental anatomy questions. And on the actual test, b/c it's on a computer, you can't underline anything, ahhhhh!!!

Ok, I'll try another one....focus, focus, focus....
How is everybody else?

hi everyone,

I was wondering does anyone have the explanations for the pilot exam? 1L? wo can send it to me :luck:

I am enrolled in Kaplan coarse and they have 5 or 6 released exams but not this one 😡
I have the questions and answers but I always like to read the explanations

thanks

Hello everyone

I am planning to start micro, where should I read it from, considering the fact that I cannot give more than 6 days to this subject as I have physio n patho also to do in mnth of june as well as review biocjem n da...

I have two books, kaplan review book, kaplan lecture notes...
approx how many days will it take to get done wth this subject.

huggies, I have ordered for new dental decks👍, Ive heard they have more clinically oriented questions..good luck for last few weeks...hey u guys will be all done by june..il be needing ur guidance in july,,kindly stay in touch....🙂🙂

xactreality, I don't have the explanations to that exam.
goyal, I think any of the sources you have will work, see which one suites your learning style better. You may end up using both, to clarify topics. I know I've used 4 different books, and still don't get it:smack:. I thought this would be my easiest topic, b/c I'm good at memorizing things... but NOT THIS TIME. I've spent the most time on it and still nada. Hopefully this time will do the trick.

Anyways, this week I will review my micro and path again, I'll give it the whole week. I'm still working this week. At night I will do exams (9-11). Next week I will do biochem and physio again (4 days), and shortly before the exam review anatomy and DA. This leaves me with 3 extra days incase I need more time to review something else. This is my attack plan.

So off to learnin' bugs:claps:
How is everyone else reviewing?

Hi Huggies,🙂
I am new to this forum, of course I have newly registered but was going through all the threads since some time.
I really appreciate your energy and attitude of inspiring others. That's really great.Only very few like you will share the information.I appreciate your attitude.
I really need your guidance.I know this is the peak period for you and I should not disturb, but I am really in a great confused state about my exam. Please guide me..🙄
I am a FTD and have started my preparation just 10 days back with Anatomy.I have finished it like 80% and I am comfortable with the subject now, however I have to study a lot and do questions.
I am pregnant of 22 weeks and started the preparation.I want to give my exam before my delivery and my doctor said that I am fine working hard till 35th week.So I have exactly 13 weeks more to study.
For how many hours are you studying for the exam?when did you start the preparation?I have to study hard for 12 hours daily to get 90.I will do that. But can I complete all my syllabus with 2 -3 revisions before the exam with the question papers? Will it affect my baby in any way?My doctor said that it would not.But still panic about my baby. But I don't want to prolong after my delivery becos I know that's really hard than studying now.
My study sources are USMLE notes for Micro & Patho along with ridiculously simple and Decks, B& P-decks, Video lectures for Biochemistry& Physio-Kaplan NBDE, Anatomy- decks, Kaplan NBDE +wikipedia, DADH - Decks + wheelers.Question papers 2 hrs per day till the end of exam.
I am planning to finish my first reading by July 20th and then the first revision by August 25th, then reviewing decks and question papers till my exam on September 5th for 3rd time.JHow z my plan? Will it work or should I postpone?
Please, please and please guide me.

Hi dentbaby!

I know I am butting in but I thought we have something in common and wanted to share with u, I am 35 weeks pregnant now, and my exam is in 2 weeks (I'm gonna be 37 :scared:) and I only started studying 3 weeks ago!!! can u believe that?!
well for me, I think that its not a matter of quantity but of quality of time, I am studying for 8-10 hours daily, just finished the first reading of Kaplan NBDE lecture notes and dental decks 06-07 and 3-4 released exams (done that in 3 weeks) now I have the 16 days left to finish my second review, I took notes in my own hand writing for any new info I found in the exams and any important highlights from the book, and planning to read those in the last 3-4 days so it'll be fresh in my mind on the exam day, ofcourse all of this talking is meaningless until I see my score  but I am so optimistic and hoping to score 90+ and after all I still have a second chance to re-take although its gonna be much harder when the baby is here!
any way just wanted to share with u and encourage u 🙂
good luck for all us!

Xacreality,
vow ...that's great.Believe me I am fully energized by reading your answer.Thank you so..much, all these days I was thinking that I am the only one started very late. Now I am very much inspired by your words and I am thinking that I am not the only one appearing for the exam in third trimester. All these days all of my family members were saying it is not possible to sit in the exam for 8 hours.
By ur great words I came to know thatall those words are making me self pity and made me to study less and forcefully.
Thank you so much ...I will now study really very very hard.I am so...grateful to you.
Thanks

Dentbaby, what Xacreality said is totally true, anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

So I didn't do much studying today, had to work, but studied b/w pts and did 25Q for DA. Microbi will be the death of me, I swear I don't know anything:bang:.
It's like I've never read it or seen it before...is this information even written in English? :help: Who came up w/ this stuff???

I decided not to review the first aid book and just go straight for the decks. So far I've memorized the viruses and read over the bacteria. Tomorrow I'll read over the bacteria again. Also every day at lunch I'll go over the staff I read the day before. My brain is full of holes, I'm telling you I can see the information going up in smoke.

Anyways, I'm off to bed, I want to have a good study day tomorrow. I'm somewhat pumped:annoyed:

OH, last night I dreamt about occlusion all night long, I woke up so tired this morning, but now definitely feel better about dental anatomy:laugh:

Huggies ur comments make me ...same is happening wth me, I not being able to get good night sleep, was in anatomy so much that i started dreaming my self as a ganglion n all the nerves passing through me, I keep getting up through out the night to check the time, so that I do not over sleep.
I have started wth micro, but will continue revising anatomy fr altlst 90 mins daily, Im doing micro frm the review book, comparing the information from the lecutre notes, i havve realised there is more extensive infrmatin in lecture notes, bt the problem is tht, i dnt have time:meanie:
nyways il try to do many xams fr micro so tht i can cover up fr the missing infrmatn...
good luck to all who have their xam in few weeks...🙂

hello again, i am done with bio/phsio, although they were so detailed, but it was worth to go over them
right now i am doing micro, unfortunately
very diificult, detailed, boring, and not worth especially when you start solving asda exams
any thing that can help with this unfavourable material?

and best wishes for mothers doing this tough exam, i really appreciate your motivation and hard working😉

Thank you very much for your encouragement.Yes I will do it.I will study these 3 months very seriously and give my exam in 36th week without any hesitation.I like your words-"Just Do It".I appreciate your help.😍
Even I am out of school since 5 years, but I will study hard.My weakest subjects are Physiology, pathology and occlusion concepts and TMJ.
I have started pathology in Goljan rapid review- very good but it seems never ending, so switching to USMLE notes.😕
Yes I did old questions and I have realized that I am very poor in simple things like peptide bonds, osmolality, so I am studying them from wikipedia.
Which one is better USMLE first aid or NBDE first aid?
Hopefully you are studying great.
Thanks

Hi Ninety,
Please tell me from where did you study Biochem & Physio? For small bonds, linkages a, carbohydrates and all which source you have followed?

dentababy, I liked kaplan first aid NBDE better than usmle. I did however use USMLE organ system (not first aid) for physio, it systematically goes over every organ system. It really helped. It's 4 books, and very detailed, I only used it for sections that I didn't understand well.

Ninety, good for you finishing bio/physio. I'm doing micro first than physio. I agree w/ you, doesn't seem to help w/ released exam, the questions there are so bizzar, that's why I'm using decks first and supplementing w/ other sources after. This has helped, I feel like there is some hope now, for this section. I'm finally done working this week, until exam time, so I can really focus. I've been sick a little, and really really tired. I feel constantly exhausted. I'm hoping to go to bed early today, and start fresh tomorrow. I've been having lots of headaches lately too, just feel so burned out.

Will do some exams tonight ...and that's it. Hope everyone else is coping better. I'm popping vitamins and ibuprofen like candy....😴

hello again,
i used first aid as an outline and kaplan notes as reference for details

but if you dont have time and want almost o pass, go with the decks

Huggies, keep it up🙂

Hello all

I am struggling with micro big time..when i read i feel i know everthning, but whn i do questions i am 😕 ...i dnt know how many revisions will i do fr micro..
i think doing decks after every subject is really helpful..
hey huggies thnks fr mentioning the micro book(ridiculously made simple), its an awesome book, im reading it, its helping a lot in undertstanding the subject..
good luck to all!

Goyal, I feel the same way about microbi, I read the book, it all makes sense, and then I do some exams and nothing makes sense even the questions themselves. Half the time I'm not even sure what they're asking for.
After doing the decks, I'm able to get about 80% questions right, but still feel extremely weak in the subject. Slowly I'm getting the feeling for it though. Answering a lot of questions helps, b/c for most part the questions are very straight forward. But for me it will definitely be my weakest section. If I could get 80 on the exam I'd be sooo happy.

I'm working on the pathology section now, and it's going much faster. I should be done w/ it tomorrow as scheduled. But will take an extra day to go over the Kaplan review book. I'm so tired, and feeling burnt out, doesn't help that I have a bit of a cold🙁
