SDN manages to both calm my fears and make them worse at times.

I was an April MCATer and my applications at 16 schools have been complete since September. I recieved two interview invites in the same week...both a few days after my files were complete. When I interviewed at GWU, it seemed like EVERYONE had already been to 4 or more interviews. I have another at Georgetown in a few weeks.

I received a rejection from pritzker a few weeks ago, but other than that...absolutely NO WORD from 13 schools. My stats are fine (3.5 and 31 with great ECs) but I'm just having afternoons of despair after checking my mailbox. Is anyone else nervous about empty mailboxes? I know it's early, but it seems like April MCATers are getting steady invites. If that's not the case for you...share your pain. feeling yucky and stressed.

🙁 🙁

sdn definitely makes me more uptight about med school apps. sometimes i think i should stop reading, but it's hard when you're addicted 🙁

don't worry... no interviews here, and i'm still waiting on secondaries for some schools.

dont worry, us kids you see with like 10 interviews already had their files complete at most schools in early august, sometimes mid to late july  put it in perspective, my application to mount sinai was complete august 8th at the latest, and i JUST got an invitation last week, so dont take much out of a school taking a long time to get back to you.

once you get past the period when all us crazy people sent in our stuff by mid july, the wheels of this process started grinding a lot slower. just be patient 🙂

hang in there..two interviews already: that's really really good! I think you'll do really well 🙂 I'm not even completed at some schools, because my committee letters are just now being sent out.....and I am just getting word that I was completed at a few schools...you should be proud and happy of your accomplishments 🙂 Keep your chin up!

Yeah... I know what you mean... I've had a few interviews and I have two more coming up, but it seems like barely any schools I want to hear from want to hear from me. People I know with similar grades and scores have interviews there, and I seem to have completed everything relatively early... So why don't they call or write or email? I mean, I got a great personality, and I'm pretty cute, and it's not like I'm pressuring them to commit! We could have a great thing going if they just gave me a chance! I guess I will have to resign myself to being love-sick and checking my email every 45 minutes to see if they wanna make a date with me...

I'm in about the same boat as you. All of my secondaries (except Duke, bleh) were complete by mid September, and I've only had two interviews so far, with another coming up in Dec.

Look on the bright side...you have an interview at Georgetown. A glance at the accept/reject/wait list shows quite a few rejections from them, one of which is mine. Besides that rejection, I haven't heard a word from any of my other schools, and my stats are decent.

As for empty mailboxes, it sure beats getting one of those thin envelopes. I keep opening the mailbox expecting to see a crop of them, so I'm pleasantly surprised when it's empty.

I only have one interview even after completing a lot of my apps early. I am worried at this point, should have heard from some schools that I haven't. My stats are okay too, so I am wondering what's screwing me up.

I'm so glad for this post because it seems like everybody else here in SDN and even some ppl I know in real life have 2 or 3 interviews already from 'prestigious' schools and even acceptances. I've only gotten one from MSU, where I go to school anyway. MSU-CHM is a great school but i've been here for 4 years, I'd like to explore a new place like Pittsburgh or Rochester. Is anyone else having this same dilemma about whether or not to stay in the same school since their undergrad if they get accepted?

Thanks guys. You're all right....it seems like having files complete in September ran right into the first big rush of applications. I am cheered by the two interviews...and thinking positively, it is nice to have space between interviews so that financial recovery is possible.

This process has been so long -my non-premed friends are blown away at what it has involved. Most of us are such go-getters that it's nearly impossible to passively wait for that letter that will shape the next four years of our lives.

Good analogy slinkie. I've heard others describe this like waiting for a love interest to call. torture.

It doesn't help that many friends and coworkers ask daily if I've gotten in yet. No people, I may not know until august. ack.

It does help to have the support of SDNers.

Only three more hours until the mail comes..

carmell1981,

I am actually kind of having that dilemma. OHSU is an awesome school in a great city, but there is a part of me that wants to experience another part of the country. I've been in Oregon for almost eight years, and will probably return to practice but I'm thinking that an east coast school might be great. My parents think I'm nuts for even considering an expensive school like Georgetown if I am accepted to Oregon, but part of me feels like you only live once, and if a school feels right, it might be a good choice.

Of course, I waiver between the safety of Portland and the adventure of a new city every day. I know this place so well, the hospitals, the neighborhoods, the nightlife. Arg. Just another concern to keep me awake at night.

I think it would be hard to decide to stay on at your undergrad institution. Let me know how it goes. And don't worry...we'll all get more interviews. Peak season is january/february. Plenty of time. (repeat statement in head as necessary)

Ms. Maven, did the post show any love today? Mine did not. The post is not with us.

I called UVM yesterday out of a strange feeling that I had forgotten to do something with their secondary. When I was looking over the secondary, I noticed the date I sent in the thing...August 5th!! What the?! So I called and asked if all of my stuff was in and the nice lady said yes and it's under review.

I have a feeling my life will be under review for the next 6 months.

Yes, we need to keep reminding ourselves it's still early....and I agree, it's way too difficult to sit around, waiting for someone to make a decision about our future.

I'm gonna use this one:laugh:

No postal love for me yesterday, buglady. You're right...endlessly under review. The only time I feel somewhat active in this process is when I get to check Northwestern's website. And it of course says nothing...but 'still under review'.

I mean, not even the courtesy rejection from stanford yet. Come on people....I don't even care if it's a thin envelope. Show me a sign that my application isn't stuck under some ad com's seat cushion.

this is totally the same boat I am in!!! I have one interview thus far and two holds and then just nothing from like 9 other schools i am not sure what the deal is.

My stats are borderline so i am kinda freakin' out and hoping to make the most of my one interview (Jefferson in Philly) and just goign from there. But I too check my email/mail all the time just waiting.

I went to UChicago which is on the quarter system so I was a little behind the main crowd because our grades weren't available to verified by AMCAS until mid to end of June. I am hoping that this doesn't hut to much in the long run!!!!

i don't think amcas verification in late june/early july is late. that's probably still considered early. i went to uchicago as well and i was debating whether or not i should send in my spring quarter grades or just go ahead with the amcas application w/o them. i chose the former, and i don't think it has had too much of a negative effect on my application timing. when did you graduate? i graduated this past june.

I graduated in June also but choose to include my spring quarter grades because they helped my science GPA .....

Where are you applying ?? have you heard anything??

Hmmm, I was looking at some old threads and it looks like Dartmouth sent out rejections around the holidays, Christmas Eve to be exact. Yowza. Perhaps Stanford is waiting for the holiday season to show us they care?!😡

That reminds me...for those of you with student loans, they start calling them in after you leave school for 6 months. Weird thing is, regardless of when you graduate (May/June), first payments are due Christmas Day (Kaplan teacher said this anyway). How nice of them to spread the holiday cheer! 🙂

I'm both an April and August MCATer. AMCAS verified at the end of June. Secondaries began arriving in July. I didn't begin them until after Aug 17 - and I think we know why. I also tucked a letter in all of secondaries requesting adcoms consider my August scores. Be careful what you wish for...

Flashforward to nearly November and I've yet to hear ANYTHING, other than an interview at my state school, which, incidentally, interviews ALL INSTATE residents!

So I'm feeling the same way everyone else on this post is feeling -unloved by Mr. Postman or Senor Yahoo! Checking status websites is a waste of wrist energy. Plus, reading SDN daily makes me feel so inadequate - I'm loathing the imminent beginning of the "Stanford vs. Tulane - where should I go?" posts!

well, I dont think SDN is necessarily the best measuring stick so dont sweat it. Your average joe-smoe med school applicant hasnt even heard of SDN and just like u theyre probably waiting as well. I sent in my secondaries a few weeks back and I just started to receive postcards stating that my application is officially complete and will be sent to the admissions committee, so it'll probably be after thanksgiving before I hear anything. Be patient and try to occupy yourself with your life outside the med school thing, I guess kinda like waiting for your mcat scores, thats what I'm doing, best of luck

hi,

not to discourage you, but if you don't hear from a school within maybe 2-3 months of completing your application, you are probably either rejected or on 'hold' for second review (especially if others have already gotten interviews). there are, of course, exceptions to this if schools are being slow and inefficient.

when i applied last year, i was rejected/wait-listed at the vast majority of schools that i did not hear from within two months.

don't feel bad about uchicago. i didn't get an interview and i had a 3.7/33, plus my dad went there for grad school. the premed advisor told me they usually like higher GPA's/MCAT's.

I totally feel u on this. I'm at MSU as well!!!
Did undergrad here, graduated may 2001, started masters, in my 2nd yr of that, I have worked at CHM for my whole timeat MSU< since sep 1997...THATS A LONG TIME. I love CHM and MSU but its almost been 6yrs on here, I feel liek I need a change of atmosphere.

GO SPARTANS!!!🙂

I feel like this whole process is a big waiting game/ lesson in patience. I waited for the August MCAT to get here. I waited for the score to make it to schools. I'm waiting on a letter of rec. And like you all, I'm waiting on schools. I, too, have become obsessed with getting the mail. Unfortunately, I also have two roommates, one of which is applying to social work schools, the other to public health schools. So with the three of us, well, the post person is in trouble!! Luckily, I have taken the mailbox key hostage, so I have dibs on the mail!! I'm trying to see the humor in this, but I'm stressed out too. I wish certain schools would just send me something, anything, even, "hey, you're application was moved from file 1 to file 2 today, that means absolutely nothing, but we wanted to let you know!"
sigh
🙄

Well, amcas & some schools do that, but we get the notices in our mailboxes a few months after the fact. When I get an urge to bother a school @ status check, I just kick myself. I have to answer the phone in my office & when someone calls unnecessarily, I feel like 🙄, so I do empathize w/ those secretaries.

Btw, since aug mcat scores came out earlier this year, does anyone know if most schools have received them by now?

Don't worry. i applied to 34 schools and to this date, I have two rejections and no interviews. I feel your pain. it sucks!

That's great...2-3 months with no word and we're probably rejected or on hold? I'm rapidly approaching the two month mark. If I've been rejected at most of these schools, then where are the rejections? Ack. I hate this waiting.

I've even considered lying ...calling tulane and telling them I'll be in N.O. in December to see if they'll interview me. I don't know if I'd actually do it.

If there are any 2 time apply-ers out there, let us know if you experienced big gaps in your invites...so some of us feel better.
