Is Goljian Worth Listening To?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think so. But not as primary study material. More like a good way to bring things that you've read about in various places together into a coherent whole.

who says you need to sit and listen? listen to this while driving and working out, just keep going through it and you'll scare yourself with how much you remember!

Wow...you mean threads actually get moved OUT of the lounge?

My entire world view has just been turned upside down...

i agree with Doctorjay on this one.....listening to goljan is a great way of studying without having to sit and read/stare at a computer for hours upon end....trust me by the end, qbank, first aid and any other medically related text wil give you a disulfarim reaction

Goljan is good, but some caveats...

1. There are hours and hours and hours of Goljan lecturing on Pathology, it requires a bit of a time commitment to get through it.

2. Goljan himself is a strange dude, I think he sort of tries to flex his mental muscles quite a bit in front of his classes, so sometimes when listening to it I would feel a bit inadequate for not seeing his connections. He makes all these statements like, "this will be on your boards, GUARANTEED" and then it's not.

3. That said, felipe is right, you won't be able to sit and read 8-10 hours a day for a month. The people who tell you they did are lying.

During the last month of boards studying, I put in a minimum of 10 hours per week, if not more!

I said a minimum of 10 hrs/wk.

In all seriousness, I think I put in from 10-14 hours of honest studying a day during that last month. Not that I've come anywhere close to that before or since then...

Goljan's lectures are definitely worth the time, in my opinion.

10 hours per week? Yikes, what did you do with the 158 hours?

Has anyone else noticed that Goljan or someone related to him seem to have about half of the diseases he discusses?

maybe he is consciously confabulating this - is this a method of teaching that allows students to remember things by relating them to someone real??

or is he just a 'pathological' liar? (excuse the pun)

i found that too....he does seem to have a lot of disease prone people in his life (his wife, his mother in law, his grandkids, a secretary in his dept and himself)

Ive been listening to goljan over the semester and have covered about half so far. I really like it because I seem to remember what he says better than reading it.

Anyway, My question is for the people who have taken step 1 and used Goljan ALOT. If you pretty much know everything that he mentions in the audio (specific details and concepts), how much of pathology are you pretty much bound to get right??? How much test overall are you bound to get right also???

I know that these questions probably have been asked before and that everyone's test is different,, but Im still interested in what everyone thinks????

Know Goljan well and both the path mini-board and the path USMLE questions will be slam dunks. (Caveat: this isn't a magic bullet; you need to do the necessary work, and not use his lectures as an excuse to slack off.) I didn't even know his stuff as well as I think you are asking, but I listened to his audio before each test and spanked them both. For what it's worth, he's the man. I'm not even an auditory learner, and was able to remember things he mentioned bizarrely well.

I agree with Sharkfan...I started listening to goljan lectures seriously sometime in March/April and I would listen to them everyday while driving to and from school.
It was the best thing I could've done to improve my score coz it helped me not only for path but for some of the other sections on step1 as well. His lectures are great, his way of presenting the material makes it stick, and you don't feel the same kind of drain as you would after reading for an hour if you listen to his one hour lecture during driving. Moreover the best thing I learned from his lectures was the mindset you need to have for taking the test. The way you should think about questions...about answers....there were many questions on the test that I was purely guessing...but even then I would think of Goljen and try to figure out that of all the answer choices what concept are they trying to test: not sure if thats the right way and not sure if I got those questions right...but I did well on step1 and I personally feel that goljen lectures had a lot to do with that....
so all in all you would only be benefitting from listening to the lectures...it wouldn't be a waste of time or energy or money (as long as you don't spend more than 5 bucks to get htem...coz seriously thye are everywhere and you can easily get them for no charge or for 5 bucks on ebay as one of my friends did)
hope this helps...
g'luck🙂

did most people JUST listen, or did you follow his written notes/path book/or some other source as you listened?

no need to take notes......just get his rapid review path book which is essentially his audio in book form and follow along with the mp3 files.........if you feel like you hear something thats relevant but not in the book, just add it in..........but honestly, it cant be too much

I listened to a couple of his lectures, but I stopped because he just rubs me the wrong way. It seemed like he was doing an awful lot of "preaching."

When I get my copy I plan to let Goljan lull me to sleep. Why not get some study time in during the Zzzzzz's?! 🙂

In all seriousness, I would think this kind of aid should be great to fill in times when the eyes just can't take any more in after reading all afternoon.

He does do this a lot, but after 30 years practicing medicine you will personally know a lot of people with a lot of different diseases who may not have been your pts in clinic, probably b/c everyone in your neighborhood, community, temple, family, circle of friends, etc...knows that you are a doctor and trust me, they'll be coming to you if they already haven't.

It's like when you're seeing pts in clinic and one says "my brother in law is a doctor and he says..." or "my cousin is surgeon and she says..." It happens way more than I thought.

Which lectures are you guys talking about. I have his USMLE rapid review. If there is something else out there, I would like to get it. Help

It is basically a series of lectures done by Dr. Goljan. My understanding is that they are not available in any legitimate way. I picked them up with bittorrent, which took many days. I seeded for several weeks, but no longer am and dont know how to start seeding again. I belive that some people are burning them onto CDs and selling them on ebay for about $5. I plan on buying his book when it gets closer to time to start studying for the test. That way he gets some compensation for his efforts.

Aren't these lectures a bit dated? I thought I heard him reference Robbins Path 6th ed in the intro Cell Injury lecture.
