Is having a Linkedin account useful for Med students and Doctors?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I created one about a year ago because I was involved in a lot of higher education work and many of my peers had one. But I can honestly say that it's done nothing but serve as a professional facebook for me.

In addition, only a few of my "connections" are in a health care related field. 95% of my connections are in the business field or hold vocational jobs.

Has anyone, especially med students and residents, ever benefited from it? Obviously it doesn't hurt to have it but I'm just curious!

I've been wondering about this myself. I also created a LinkedIn while involved in higher education work, but I never found it useful as a pre-med student. I decided to delete it after that password breach last year.

If LinkedIn isn't useful for making connections in medicine, are any of these sites? Or do I actually need to meet people in real life?
