So both of my parents did not finish high school as they were born outside of the US in small villages where education was not an option. My mother finished upto 10th grade (no documentation of diploma) and my father did finish high school but there is no documentation and it was at a village school. When they immigrated to the US they tried Adult school but did not receive GED or anything. Therefore, education is less than high school for both.

I am first generation/first in the family to receive a bachelors (cGPA: 3.8), I was born in the US moved to a different "developing/undeveloped country" and studied there for a couple of years. Came back to the US finished high school and then graduated college. With my grades it is clear that I DID NOT struggle during school. I did however struggle in the other country due to language barriers (only knew English) but was able to overcome it after attending lots of after school tutoring - this was from 5th grade to 10 grade so I'm guessing most adcoms wouldn't care.

Also, my parents net income is <20,000 and we all received medicaid, I received FAP and full tuition fin aid throughout college and worked part time

So my question is this considered a disadvantage even though if you look at my academic history it looks like I did not struggle at all? I honestly wasn't going to choose the option but after seeing others talking about low income = disadvantage, I feel like I clearly have had a disadvantage compared to others, any input???

I don't think disadvantage is based off your performance, but rather life circumstances. Someone can have a poor background but still excel, that doesn't mean their background is no longer considered disadvantaged.

So do you think I should apply with a disadvantage status depending on my circumstances?

Do you feel disadvantaged? Grades don't always reflect circumstances. If you can write a good narrative on it, I don't see why this wouldn't qualify.

Yes. The path traveled is one that get's Adcom's attention. We're addicted to the rags-to-riches/come-from behind stories. It's in our national DNA.

I just realized I am an ORM, this whole time I thought I fell under the URM category. But after consulting with my advisor she laughed and said that I am definitely considered an ORM not to include URM status anywhere. Can I still include disadvantaged student.

I am so confused, I don't understand how I can say I am disadvantage without saying my family is poor, I'm poor please take me in. Does anyone have an example or know where I can find an example so I can properly write my disadvantaged statement. This is honestly harder than I thought and now that I'm an ORM it's even harder...:bang:

I don't understand why you're so confused. ORM status doesn't change your disadvantaged status. Most applicants that apply disadvantaged are ORM! Pull yourself together!

You can google examples. Draft a good statement and make sure you don't say again that neither parent finished high school, but that your dad did finish high school (but there's no documentation).

URM/ORM is typically based on race/ethnicity/heritage
Disadvantaged is typically based on socioeconomic status/education level of parents. They are different things.
