Does anyone know if it is a disadvantage for an applicant to dental school that had applied to medical school in the past? Is it crucial to state this on the aadsas app?
can you simply not tell them or fill in that section?
Just curious....thanks all! 🙂

I don't know if it's a big disadvantage or not. I think if you qualify acedemicaly and show that you have researched dental school and know why you want to be a dentist, you are just as likely to be accepted. There is a question on the application that asks if you applied to any other medical professional schools though.

yes exactly....there is a section for this particular question. But...what if you didnt tell them at all? Can they found out, thats all? Thanks!! 🙂

I don't know how they would find out. But if they do have some way of finding out it could cost you your chances because you lied. I guess it's a risk someone has to be willing to take. But, I don't think it would be a big deal to be honest about medical school. In fact it could be a strength if you worked it right. Why did you decide against medical school?

i was basically in the medicine path because of my parents pressure...and never took it seriuosly, especially with applying or taking mcats. when i ventured on my own in dentistry, I found that this was more "me". It sounds cliche, but i love to help people in all ways, love working with my hands (play music, art, athletics, whatever), and want to live my own life around a family.
anyway, thats pretty much it, and I dont want to fill that section even though I did apply, but for nothing really. I dont know if it is worth lying.

i have taken the mcat and applied to med schools before deciding to apply to dental schools and I don’t think it will hurt your chances for getting in.

i did not mention this in my personal essay and quickly wrote that I applied to med and grad schools in the past and that I went to grad school.

some of the secondary applications (UCLA) ask you if you have applied to any other health profession schools in the past and if yes they ask you to explain. So I told them what schools I applied to and when.

No other school (Tufts, Arizona, etc.) ever asked me about applying to medical schools in the past during the interview. and other then UCLA no other school that i applied to had that question on the secondary.

So have an answer planned for why you decided to switch to dentistry but there is no need to volunteer that information (unless asked).

Good luck.

I was in the same situation as howui3, and I completely agree 👍 good answer!

dude, it's like telling your new gf you've cheated on your ex before. now why the f**k would you do that. everything works out if you just keep your mouth shut and let the good times roll. carry on, billy.

but...the AADSAS does have a question if you have applied to any other health profession schools. and you don't want to lie or omit info.

heh... is lying by omission really valid? i mean if you don't tell someone something is it technically a lie?

*edit* not that i condone cheating with your SO or lying on the application... just curious

but how could dental adcoms find out anyway?
AND, why would they want to find out? DO they check all applicants if they dont state it on the app? 🙁

I would just tell the truth and explain the situation if they ask about it in an interview.
