To everyone who just got accepted, Congratulations!
To everyone else, an early Congratulations because I'm sure the acceptances are gonna roll in sometime soon!

Ok. Down to business. How do you guys feel about getting random roomates through the help of dental schools? I'm torn. I've never had a roommate before so I think I should try living by myself for the first year and then hopefully find a cool roomate for the second year. That way, I'll know who I'm sharing an apartment with.

What are your thoughts on having random roommates?

I'd say you have a good plan in finding a roommate for the second year. I say this because random can work sometimes, but I wouldn't want to risk it.

it's hit or miss and i wouldn't do it because if it's a miss it's just going to be a hassle

It's as simple as this, if you've never had a roommate, definitely DO NOT get a roommate during dental school, especially a random one at that.

Don't do it!! Yeah, roommates can be good, but, in my case, roommates have been very, very bad. Take for example the time I walked in on my roommate having coitus on my bed...

I agree. First year's a killer...even if it's not as time-consuming as second year is supposed to be, it's very hard academically and you're also adjusting to a new place and dental school in general. I say find a cheap apartment (you can always move to a larger, nicer place if you find a roommate you'd do well with) and make an environment that would work best for you.

A bad roommate breaks down all the rest of your life because it causes a problem at home - the one place you can't get away from. I've seen it ruin people!

I currentlly live with two random people who I hooked up with to live through craigslist (we were all looking for a place at the same time)...I was desperate because I needed to find a place and couldn't afford it alone anymore (after quitting my job).

I'll spare you the details of that 1 year lease with those two but I will say

STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM RANDOM ROOMMATE CHOICES!

aren't we class of 2011??? 😕

🙂
Thanks guys. I was considering it a little bit because it would save money but I think you guys are right.

Are there any tips on finding cheap housing?

Which city is this for? Regardless, see if it has the following:

--craigslist.org
--www.rent.com
--some schools have a graduate student or commuter housing link on their web site. Great resource, since everyone's in the same boat! Give them a call to ask
--check the online version of the local newspapers for that city...they usually scan their classifieds as well
--www.apartments.com
--if you're able to get to your school, hang up flyers saying you're looking for something

I would live on my own the first year if I were you. You don't want to end up with some crazy schizophrenic room mate like my cousin did one year in undergrad. You don't want to deal with an uncooperative roomie your first year in dental school. You have more important things to worry about than having to argue with who's going to do the dishes, vacuuming, etc.

yea i had two bad roommates in undergrad and i dont feel like dealing with that on top of dental school. im gonna try to live on my own my first year.

When is the best time to search for housing?
two months before classes start is good enough?
I've never had to search for housing before..

THanks for the online rental sites!! I will be sure to check them out. Oh and I'm looking for housing in Philadelphia

I'd get a studio. Even just sharing a kitchen with someone can be annoying.

No probs 🙂

I would look as early as you can. The fewer stresses that happen later on, the better. The only problem is that most places only become available (or know when they'll be available) a few months before the lease starts. So though you can get an idea of pricing now, you'll get the most responses a month or two before you want to move.

I WOULD recommend moving early to Philly, if you can afford it. The more settled you are, the more ready you'll be when school starts. If you can find a summer job, you can live there all summer (that's what I did here.)

Also, always look at an apartment in person before you sign a lease. You can have an "apartment weekend" where you set up like a dozen places to visit in a few days to make it worth the trip. Make sure you do things like check the water pressure, ask about major appliances, extras like trash removal, ask how much utilities cost in that area, etc. etc.

so am I really the only person who doesn't want to live by myself? I'm about 99.9% positive that I'm going to go to Marquette, and I don't think I'd be comfortable living in that area alone...

what's a coitus?

Oh, also, it's not dentistry-related.

Well, since this a dental forum, I don't want to post anything irrelevant. Thus, my suggestion is that you google this topic. I'm sure you'll find plenty of references online.
