Is it bad to list the same activity in multiple sections?

As a Texas resident I'm confused, because TMDSAS "strong encourages" us to put the same activity in different categories. How does AMCAS feel about this?

For example, tutoring underserved children. This is both tutoring and community service. Can I list it under both?

No, only use each activity once on AMCAS under the most appropriate category.

Thanks for the response. Not to sound rude, but is this your opinion, or the general consensus? 😀

So then something like tutoring underprivileged children - what is that? Tutoring or community service? :/

Use them in ALL appropriate sections.

If one of your ECs is also related to community service then put them in both sections.

I had a research activity that involved dealing with patients which also counts as clinical experience. And two deans told me to put them in both sections.

I heard the complete opposite 🙁

Guess it doesn't make that big of a difference either way.

You shouldn't be listing one EC twice. That's just weird. List EACH EC ONCE, assign it the most reasonable heading. If it's a research project that was clinical, do the research part as your project (e.g., the presentation/pub itself) and then list the experience as your clinical. Listing the same thing twice is just plain strange.

That's what I did as well.

I'm going by what two of the deans told me. In addition, the TMDSAS application states that if an activity qualifies in two separate sections, then you should list them in both.

This is correct, do not list an activity under more than one category. A dean of admissions at one school I am applying to came to my University. He called what you are referring to double-dipping. He said that admissions committees aren't stupid and they will be able to understand if an activity falls under more than one category.

For TMDSAS listing in two separate sections is fine, but not for AMCAS.

You should only list activities once in AMCAS. All your activities will be listed on the application in chronological order, so it's not like the adcom would miss an entry... it will be blatantly obvious if you list it twice.

List it once under the most appropriate category. Or if you're deficient in one then put it as that if it fits

You can only list 15 EC's on AMCAS. If you list them multiple times you will be wasting your spots.
