Is it common for programs to substitute the second semester of organic chemistry for Biochemistry? I am a non-trad and my institution suggested biochemistry instead of a second semester of organic chemistry. If I apply to programs that require two semesters of ochem, can I still possibly be accepted with the completion of the course before matriculation?

I have never heard of this, at least from my state's schools. Perhaps some schools might only require one semesters of o-chem. I would look up pre-requisites for potential schools and find out that way, or contact the schools directly. I'd hate for you to only take one semester of o-chem and biochem, then find out that you need two semesters of o-chem.

I have been doing research and I believe it is school dependent, some schools only require 1 semester of organic chemistry whereas some have two semesters of organic chemistry needed and some give the option to substitute the second semester of ochem for biochem.

You are fine. Apply to all schools and if accepted to one that requires ochem 2 you can get it done in spring semester of the application year.

Probably best to take OChem 2. It would help with the MCAT as well.

Not sure about this. I took the mcat a year ago, and through all of the prep there was little orgo to begin with, let alone topics typically covered in orgo II. Just my experience

I guess I should have said that it would help a little with the MCAT. Orgo isn't tested heavily, but would still get a question or 2 from Orgo II

I agree with Nibler and Shammy. I would normally advise people to just take Orgo 2 and get it done as it may help a small amount on the MCAT.

I'd say about 25% of schools I was thinking of applying to required Ochem 2 and 75% said biochem could substitute
