I heard your race matters when applying to medical school. So far i hear it's..

Easiest>African American>Native American>Hispanic>Asian/Indian>White>Hardest

Does anyone not see how this is wrong to do?...You're basically giving one race a higher chance then another race..

I understand if they take your financial status or area you're growing up in as a factor.

This is a novel thread...🙄

The answer to your question is yes. That is just the way it is, nothing you can do about it. Just get a GPA of 4.0 and MCAT of 35 and you will get in somewhere, so it won't matter.

Asians and other over represented minorities definitely have it harder than whites.

But otherwise, yeah, you heard right.

well that sucks 🙁

actually whites have it "slightly" harder than asians but only by like 2-3%. In any case, being black, hispanic or tribal NA will get you into M.D school as long as you can B.S and say your going to help your community

Interesting about the (cauc)asians. Any chance you have some stats? : )

Aren't asians considered to be ORM, thus making it harder to get accepted with the same stats (when compared to whites)? Or am I missing something?

Oh you are so right every black, hispanic or Tribal NA have .003 GPA and .001 sciGPAs and 3 MCATs and are admitted to med school.... NOT.😎

What about Indians compared to East Asians (Chinese specifically)?

Sorry i meant that its 2-3% easier for whites. Anyway heres my analysis from the 2011 application cycle.

Applicants (ASIAN) = 8941, Applicants(WHITE)=23958
Matriculants (ASIAN) = 3859, Matriculants (WHITE)=11060

Acceptance Rate (Asian) = (3859/8941) = 43.16
Acceptance Rate (White) = (11060/23958) = 46.16

This analysis does not take into account half breeds of either classification.

Note: this is only 2011. Try the same analysis on previous years, make a distribution for sake of clarity.

tl;dr -> it doesn't really matter. Being asian or white leaves you with practically the same chances which can vary from year to year.

I wasn't trying to form an insult. Its just a matter of fact. Practically every medical school now a days either has some kind of promotional focus on URM in the application cycle, or they have a separate acceptance pathway. It doesn't mean these people are stupid in any way, but when compared to the average asian or white applicant, they have higher chances statistically.

We need to get rid of this white affirmative action against asians.

Truth.

how the hell could you think it's harder for whites to get in than indians and asians?

Well, statistically ease of stats go:

Blacks, Hisp., Nat. Am Indians >>>>>> Caucasians > Indians ~ Asians

I think if you conduct a study on this and donate it to AAMC it will count as a pub. Something that unique would undoubtedly cancel out your caucasian status and place you somewhere between a native american and hispanic.

Best of luck in your statistical analysis endeavors!

What about Pacific Islanders?! Where does this 0.5% of the applicant pool fall? I will not be denied!

Half breeds? Who are you?

If the percentage of whites is higher than asians, how do whites have it slightly harder? I think of it like this:

URM = slight advantage
White = neutral
ORM = slight disadvantage

Ohoho chaps, do the quadroons have their bloomers in a twist again?

*looks at the numbers*

Your idea of 'slight' is very... broad.
The difference between URM/ORM scales is incredibly large.

I believe the aamc has data on every race by MCAT and GPA making speculation really unnecessary. If ot hasn't been done by morning I will post then. On phone now and that just sounds waaayyyu too difficult

Yup, if anyone is curious it is a sticky in the What Are My Chances board

Actually less Blacks are accepted per year than Whites...yes it may seem shocking but it is true, SDN conservatives though would like you to not believe that.

In 2011, 36.1% of African Americans applicants were accepted vs. 48.3% of whites.

These threads make it seem like if you go to a med school it's filled with URMs, and the occasional White or Asian who managed his way in with above-stellar stats.
Please. 🙄
Yeah it's unfair you worked harder but didn't get in like the person who looks like they worked less because of lower stats (may not be true btw). But do we REALLY want to talk about unfairness between the races? Really now. All these URM-bashing threads are extremely sad. And if presented in the real world would be laughed at so hard.

Nobody ever said the number of blacks being accepted is greater than the number of whites. That would be ludicrous. Similarly, nobody ever said the acceptance percentage for blacks is higher than that of their white counterparts.

What has been said is this: Blacks, on the whole, get accepted with lower statistics than whites.
