Is it easier to get into med school if you're not white?

I merely stated the fact the abortion rate among African-Americans is higher than the abortion rate for other races, including for European-Americans like me.

In New York City, for example, the ~60% of pregancies among African-Americans end in an abortion. European-Americans and Asian-Americans are at ~21%. These numbers show that a bit more responsibilty would be good for everyone, not just African-Americans.

"merely" my a**. You also talked about how it was attributable to their culture.

It's not a fallback argument I'm being serious. You keep making these huge sweeping generalizations that try and cram thousands of problems into "it's just their culture to have more abortions"

Go take some sociology or minority relations classes or something.

Edit: Let me finally add one more problem that makes this discussion pointless: you're jumping from point to point with no clear connections between the arguments, it's like you're flinging out whatever pops into your head next regardless of if it makes sense or not. I had a response for your claim about African Americans having abortions, and now you're starting to talk about liberty and nanny states? What exactly are you arguing here? What is the point in it? You're jumping around like a frickin mexican jumping bean from topic to topic.

just..... goodnight.

okay now that's just very offensive

Lol. Sociology major, bio minor. And Libertarian. 99 times out of 100, when someone blames society, they should instead look inward and consider the choices they made. These are indirectly related to family structure, culture, etc.

Ugh here I am again even though I said I was going to bed.

Comparing scattered arguments to a Mexican jumping bean is offensive? Lol I'm Mexican and I don't find it the slightest bit offensive. It's like comparing someone to a wet noodle (and all the Italians gasp... Oh, the travesty!)

Stop trying to rope me in with your racism.

I disagree strongly with your use of the bolded term, and I find it quite offensive.

Dude, you are a shortsighted person who refuses to accept other people's argument. You judge others based on your beliefs, which is completely stupid for any average person. You jump into conclusions that generalize extremely complicated topics, which academic people are still trying to figure out. And you think you got it all figured out ha? I'm terms of the URM topic, I posted an article in a previous page in this thread ... Go read it and learn about evidence people have accumulated on the subject.

Indeed, the abortion rate among African-Americans is higher than that for other races. Is this another one of "whitey's" evil racist conspiracies, or is this a reflection of African-American culture? Which is more plausible?

Man, you truly have issues! Are you blaming African American culture to the high rate of abortion? Again, you are jumping into a simple explanation of a complex topic, this proof you're shortsighted and cannot see beyond your nose when analyzing a problem.

Are you a sociology major? Don't believe it.

Please present an alternative explanation.

Even though it is so complicated, one short explanation will be sufficient enough for you? I hope he doesn't even give this the time of day, because he already said it is so complex even people in academics don't have a good "explanation" yet. There are hundreds, even thousands of different factors that must be taken into consideration. Life isn't one thing or the other, and the lack of the ability to formulate a good explanation different from yours because it's such a vast issue doesn't suddenly make your explanation correct. Come on, you're supposedly a sociology major, right?

I'm not an expert on this issue, or would I pretend to be one [like you are]. I doubt this issue has a simple answer given that there many compounding variables, which influence the outcome.

In the end, it's a matter of personal accountability. There's no comlicated, academic explanation needed for why one becomes pregnant. It's called sex. If you don't have sex, you don't get pregnant. If you don't know that having sex leads to pregnancy, your family has failed you (and our public education system has also not done its job, but remember that sex ed is not in the purview of the state).

The hardest aspect of being a sociology major is peeling back the layers of polical correctness and actually holding people accountable for their own actions. Academics in general love to say how there are hundreds, nay THOUSANDS of variable at play, when in reality a few things could be changed/improved and one's life could be drastically improved. But let's not make this too easy.

Let me peel back your layers.

Paragraph one:
Everyone gets horny. Some people have health insurance that pays for their birth control, and screw everyone else.

Paragraph two:
I think that academia has a liberal bias so I think all they say is coated in a layer of BS and the truth is, obviously, more in line with my racialized explanations of things. Also, I call everything I don't like "politically correct."...yadayayada. PULL YOURSELF UP BY YOUR BOOTSTRAPS.

Again, you are being shortsighted. This must be your freshman year as sociology major ha?
There are many reason why people have unprotected sex, which leads to pregnancy: lack of knowledge, religion, hopelessness, inability to negotiate contraception, drugs, dysfunctional families and many more. AGAIN, look beyond the surface of a problem, that's a skill you want to develop as a doctor.... Work on it!!!

"Screw everyone else." When did I ever say that? I am only providing an explanation of the higher abortion rate among African-Americans. I believe abortion, in most cases, is immoral, but I think it should be legal nonetheless.

"Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps." Lol.

MY money pays for the:
-housing
-education
-roads
-bridges
-sidewalks
-clothing
-healthcare
-food
-utilities

of poor people. If you can't succeed in this country, it's your own fault.

My my, what a generous man you are to give away your money like that. What with all those sidewalks and bridges, you'd think those blacks and browns would actually get places.

Ironically, I repeat that part about "if you can't succeed, it's your own damn fault." But in this case, I'm telling it to you with regards to med school admissions.

Abortion immoral? Jejeje that's cute!

Many people's arguments sound like the "crime rates increase with ice cream sales" conflation. Whether there is affirmative action or not, schools will always target a certain diversity because rich white kids aren't likely to serve in underinsured or underserved areas so this argument is silly. In a similar manner, committing to a rural program at many schools increases your odds of getting in. That' just life. Male nurses have a higher rate of management promotion because of the numbers and needs. These situations occur in all fields and it will always be that way unless some miracle happens and everyone views each other equally.

Isn't accumulating 300k + in debt and serving in an underinsured/underserved area the definition of stupidity?

Not if that's what you want to do. It's not all about the money to everyone. Perfect proof that they need people like you and people that aren't like you but I'd agree that race shouldn't matter much. If a white kid wants to serve in poor minority communities, they should get the spot if they deserve it. However, people that don't get in are always going to complain. Some may complain that some minority took their spot but completely ignore that they also got beat out by a crapload of white kids also. My opinion has always been that I feel sorry for Asian-Americans because they get lumped in with Asians from Asia who filter their kids out and send the best here and skew the numbers but an Asian from here should be treated just like anyone else I think and not considered over-represented.

How did this thread make it over 4 pages and a necro bump without getting locked?

I heard your race matters when applying to medical school. So far i hear it's..

Easiest>African American>Native American>Hispanic>Asian/Indian>White>Hardest

Does anyone not see how this is wrong to do?...You're basically giving one race a higher chance then another race..

I understand if they take your financial status or area you're growing up in as a factor.

tl;dr

I agree OP. I agree.

I almost forgot that I posted in this thread.
