is it easy for a DO to become a hospitalist?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i've heard somewhere that certain hospitals/job positions say "MD only" in their recruitment ads. does this mean DOs can't apply or will be discriminated against? or does "MD" in this case refer to physicians in general that are board certified?

Depends on the politics of the hospital. The ONLY place I was told I would not be given an interview because I was a DO was in Denver, Colorado at a clinic that was run by old timer MD's.

i see. but for the vast majority of hospitals and even academic institutes (95%+), DOs wont face employment discrimination if they completed MD residencies and are board certified, right?

say a DO and a MD (same residency, same board certification, same credentials/everything) is applying to one position, will the MD get picked simply because of the degree?

WOW you guys need to quit being so hung up on which residency you choose. Jobs depend on being board certified and not having malpractice or addiction issues, or reprimands against you in the reportable record.

Nah. Any premed SDNer would say yes but reality is that employers will not discriminate once you're past residency and fellowship. I know this by speaking to enough DO attendings.

Since no one ever has the exact same credentials on their resume, it's a hard theoretical question to answer. If you are acgme trained and acgme board certified, doors will not close on you.

If any MD attending says yes, they are either misinformed, prejudice or a senior citizen who probably uses old terms like "osteopath." Isolated cases nonetheless.

Very easy. A close friend of mine became one. I saw her in action and she was wonderful.

i just became aware of this 200k+ specialty, and after doing some research, it does seem appealing to me.

so to qualify for a hospitalist position, you just got to do a 3 year IM residency, right?

if you are a DO that can only match into a low/mid tier residency, will you be a competitive applicant for a hospitalist position? to my knowledge, it doesnt seem like a competitive specialty.

NO, they get chosen based on experience and the need of the facility.
