Is it hard to git in at ASDOH?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I friend just told that is really hard to get in at ASDOH. What are your experiences with this school?

If I move to AZ next Summer 😕 I'll be a resident, and maybe I can find some Cuban connections there? 👍 Just kidding.

I'm hoping to graduate with a 3.5 GPA in 3 yrs maybe less....

Thanks in advance 🙂

Since Arizona is a private school, it does not matter whether you establish residency or not. There are some Cubans here, but I'm sure not as many as where you come from. Primarily we have more Mexican descendants. I'm loving my experience at ASDOH so far. We have several people that have children and there are 11 or so people (out of 54) who are over the age of 30 (myself included). If you graduate with that GPA you should be competitive, but one of the most important aspects of your application will be your community service background. As it has been mentioned, applications to the school continue to increase and we have cut down on interview schedules, so it keeps getting more and more competitive as time goes by. Good luck and feel free to PM me if you have additional questions.

About establishing residence:

First off, as previous poster said, AZ is a private school and it won't help your tuition.

Secondly, attending school is not enough to establish residence. Even buying a home while you go to school may not be enough. The state considers your stay temporary while attending school. It is possible though. I'm sure you will have to jump through a few hoops.

When it comes to the essay portion of the interview, ASDOH does grade on spelling and grammar. 😉

I didn't wright a esay for the interview.

Just got my rejection letter from them today. Ah well, I'm over it. I really liked the school and there's nothing that I feel needs to be improved on my grades and DAT scores. It all came down to the interview. I really didn't like the experience and I guess they didn't like it from their perspective either.

OH NO Beestieboy!!! Please tell me what happened in your interview?! Your stats are so high and got rejected??? Man, my stats are avg and I feel like I did bad on the interview, so that means my rejection letter is coming??? pls...I really want to get in ASDOH too 🙁

"Stats" really have so little to do with acceptance here. I've known lots of applicants with numbers like Beestieboy's who didn't get in here. Basically, they collect your stats just to see if you can handle "the rigors of dental school" and graduate. I found this out the hard way because my "stats" were well above ASDOH's published numbers and I couldn't figure out why I still hadn't heard from them at the end of January. Wasn't this school just dying to get amazing academicians like myself??? What I realized was that I probably wasn't the most outstanding applicant they had had in terms of life experience, community involvement, and geographical awareness. To use a term coined by the democrats of this great country, I thought there was a "litmus test" of what the ASDOH ad com wanted. There is not. I am glad that eventually they let me in because I love this school. I have good grades, a great board score, involved in leadership and I honestly don't know if I would get in again due to the competition and the caliber of people who currently get accepted here. I'm just glad that I did get in. Best of luck to all of you.

OK, I am now officially freaking out! I dread the walk to my mailbox every day.

This sucks! I can't wait until this process is over.

LOL! I actually interviewed at UNLV just a couple days before Arizona. I don't want to be really negative towards Arizona, but man, that intervew was so far off what the other dental school interviews were. I like the idea they have, the timing of the boards, the use of technology, the way they don't have tenured faculty, the area, the community, all of it. I just didn't feel like the people running the interview got to know me. I smoked the hand skills test earning an audible "wow" from the old guys taking the scores twice. I did very well on the survival game luckily having had a class that did an exercise like that not too long before. I knew all the crazy questions in the interview except for where friggen Lucern was. Since I haven't been to Europe or Switzerland, how the crap was I to know? Plus, when was the last time that place was in the news and why should I know it? Anyways, the guys on my panel were just really crusty. The didn't give me anything to play back on in the interview. They stonewalled me when I asked what kind of students they want in their school. I guess don't ask that question. They seriously said "we can't tell you" and then let the conversation mood just die. You could never tell if they wanted you to talk more, shut up, or anything like that. They made it very hard for me to feel comfortable and act like myself. I came out of the room feeling really rattled and wishing I could have said things a little differently, but oh well. Luckily it's the only school that did that to me. It was the students afterwards who sold the school to me. They were great, didn't show stress, and were really enjoying their experience. Plus the facilites were beautiful. Ah well.

UNLV on the other hand was a very pleasant experience the whole way through. The people were so very nice and the students were helpful. The interviews were low stress and I felt comfortable in conversation with them and felt they got to see me in a better and more natural light. Their facilites are as nice as Arizona and it's closer to family for me. I would love to go to UNLV and in fact I hope I get the chance.

Good luck to you all. Seriously.

Thank you all that responded 🙂

hello- can you please tell me what this meant

There is a hand skills test to test your manual dexterity, there is a group interaction/discussion segment, and there will be a geography question. It changes all the time so don't just think that if you know where Lucern is that you're good to go. There is a heck of a lot more than the above, but I don't want to ruin the....suprise.

Arizona seems to be unique in their interview process. I interviewd there but have not interviewed anywhere else yet so can not compare.

It IS difficult to get into AZ, but it's also difficult to get into most schools around the country.

There are a lot of factors that come into play, including personality, grades, DAT scores, LORs, and how early you apply. This goes for every school, not just ASDOH.

Does it really matter how early you apply? Joyce (admission lady) said they only send out about 20 acceptance letters on Dec 1st and they will interview all the way to feb or march and those plp are still interviewing for avaliable spots in class.

It matters less than at other schools. A lot of schools send out acceptances to fill their class on December 1st and by January 1 they are full. Arizona does only release about a third of their acceptances at a time which can be frustrating if you are number 41 to be accepted. I didn't find out until February.

LOL, not if you like actually doing work in the clinic. 😉

Huh? Am I missing some sort of inside joke or do you think that we don't do any clinical work at UNLV?

It absolutely matters how early you apply. It isn't as if you can apply to all other schools early and then AZ later because they perhaps don't put as much emphasis on it.
