Or is the student doctor network more like the student distress network. Even better, the student depression network. I know the intentions of most people who post here are good, but it often seems my confidence is quickly dissipated every time I log on and read a post. Those of who out there who encourage one another, keep it up. However, I consistently amazed by the numerous judgmental and condescending posts I read on here. The author, for all I know, may feel qualified to dispense his or her "advice," but honestly, if you are not head of admissions then... shut up. We can all offer our opinions based on statistical data, but when it is all said and done it is not up to us. I assume most of us here are pre-health students, so the often competitive nature of this forum should come as no surprise. The DAT bashing, GPA trashing, and intellectual elitist jargon is worthless. One person may excel in one area, yet falter in another. That is why the application is so long and even more reason why dental schools take the effort to interview applicants. No matter where you stand in the process, keep your head up. Expect success, and do not give up until you achieve it. Thank you for allowing me to get that off my chest.

This forum is about opinions. People directly ask for them. It's up to every individual to take'm or leave'm.

Alot of the people here have experience in the app procees, many are current dental students, some are dentists. You don't have to be an adcom to give your opinion on something.

For instance, if someone asked what they should do if their GPA was a 2.8, all pre-recs from a CC, their DAT was 17/16/15 and they are submitting their app in Sep, I'd be confident in say'n, "Don't waste your money, cuz you aint geting in!". Do I know for a fact they won't? No, but it's a snowball's chance in hell and I don't need to be an adcom to know that. It's not being mean, it's the harsh reality of it.

Its true I do get a little depressed sometimes when I read someone looking for help and there stats are not to different than mine, or people post there DAT scores and they are what I would be happy with, and they get owned. However sometimes I am given a boost by others who have been accepted with lower stats. So this helps.

PDizzle is right though, you play the numbers game and sometimes it just does not add up for them this go around. Give them some advice on how to raise that GPA or do something to help out. They are looking for advice and here they can get 30+ opinions very easily.

-Side note the DAT Discussion Board seems perhaps a tad nicer 🙂

I believe the good out weighs the bad on this forum. I agree that no one wants to get "bad news" however I believe the people here are good natured and just trying to relieve some of the stress that accompines a competative and demanding process of application. Lets face it- I think for most of us- the application process is one of the most emotionally trying times in our lives. The majority of what I've seen is people helpn' people. If someone isn't comfortable having their stats posted and being reciving the members opinion to what "their chances are" then don't post. I do agree that some times there is a bad apple who likes to chime in on a post- but really I think their witty remarks are just an attempt to lighten things up. Good luck to you.

I totally agree with you. If you post your stats on here and and ask for criticism you are going to get it. Sure, SDN does encourage people to better them self with wonderful advice, but with the goods comes the bad. This is reality people, we can't sugar coat everything.

Get off of it! Some people actually have spoken to ADCOM members... ever think of that? I have been told a TON of valuable information from those at 2 dental schools... extensively. In addition, don't assume everyone is like you. It took me personally 5 years post undergrad to decide to go into dentistry. Judging by the (approx) 30+ others in my class that are over age 22, I'd say that is fairly typical.

If you don't like the forum, go elsewhere, buddy. We are here for help AND support. As said many times and coined by (Truman was it?)... If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. You may have a problem in this field if you can't handle criticism and stress. Just some FYI.

Don't focus on the few that try to bring others down out of jealousy...Focus on the threads and posters that are rich in advice and LEARN! Of course anyone CAN do it... but not everyone CAN do it for the right reasons.

SugarNaCl- Your type of rhetoric is exactly what I am talking about. I may have a problem in the field if I cannot handle criticism? Wow. Who said I ever posted my stats? And who said I was stressed? It is these type of generalizations brought on by "experts" that really help no one. This post originated from reading responses to the numerous "What are my chances?" posts. Ya, I agree if you have a 2.5 and 14 DAT and are applying in Sept. then don't waste your time and money. Yes, this forum can help. I know it gave me a few kicks in the pants when I was studying for the DAT; however, just because you got in to dental school or have spoken to a admissions officer does not make you Lord of SDN. That is all. Sometimes it is not what you say, but how you say it.

So why are you still here?

LOL- That is a really good question. I am not surprised by the responses though. I knew half of the replies to my post would be logical and for the most part positive. On the other hand, I also knew some people would tell me to get the hell out. I just want to thank them for proving my point. People hiding behind a computer monitor will pretty much say anything these days. Go read the responses to "DAT score 16.....20 on PAT" by FSUChic for clarification. I guess computers killed tact a long time ago. As for me, I will trust MY advisors, MY dentists, and MY friends who can respond to me honestly but more importantly with respect.

Oh, I agree 100%... with one exception. I'd say the same thing to your face. Just so happens you likely don't live near me. If you ever find yourself in Richmond and want a dose of reality and a nice heart to heart, I'll give you my address. 😉

SugarNaCl- I was going to say you don't moderate you moderHATE, but now I'm starting to like you. haha

Why thank you. You actually don't seem too bad yourself 😉

I truly would be dorky by the way if I started power tripping over being an assistant moderator on a dental forum, wouldn't I be? I'm just here to help with the information I have.

I told one of my friends at school my SDN identity and he made fun of me and told me he could see me sitting at my computer with a badge and a hat...and a whistle. I'll never live it down.

Good luck to you.

Thank you for the well wishes. Honestly, my app is strong (according to the pre-health committee at my school) and I am optimistic about my chances in TX. I won't lie though, my DAT, although good, could be a bit higher but I should not be discouraged. Last cycle, one of my co-workers became obsessed with SDN. All the statistcal comparisons and subjective opinions took a toll on him and created unwarranted paranoia. In the end, he was not accepted. I would just hate to see someone get an interview and go into it with low expectations based on what someone said on here. (Can we accurately judge someone's intentions over the internet, most likely not.) I will say it is interesting how I have received some private messages agreeing with me. Have the SDN bullies incurred some population suppression? Keep the criticism constructive, that is all. After all I could have easily responded to SugarNaCl by stating her lack of disregard would pose problems with patients and she should probably reconsider her profession. After all, she did say I could not take criticism. (Amusing, since I am entering the Navy in 2009 as well haha.) But I did not want to be a popinjay nor would I have believed my own words. Think before you type.

So to sum it all up...

-some people are nice, and some people are d*cks (no, that does not mean ducks)

-nice people will give you advice, but they can be wrong sometimes

-a**holes will make fun of you, but they can be right sometimes too

-it's an anonymous internet forum, people are going to say dumb/mean/rude things because there's no one there to kick their a*ses.

-don't take SDN so seriously

-if someone hurts your feelings on SDN... well, who the f*ck cares!? It's an anonymous internet forum!

GAWK... You should see how I have treated the patients I have seen so far... I have perfected this art in 35 seconds

1. Kick 'em where it counts
2. Push 'em into the chair
3. Rip out biggest needle I can find
4. Go to town

Then another 2 minutes for the procedure and 1 minute to collect my funds!

🙄

It's like going to Jiffy Lube for an oil change... only faster!

LOL @ Phraud. I think you said it best, man. Also, you're right... quotes do make me look like an a$$.

SugarNaCl- In my post I told you I did not believe what I said about your disregard (just making a point). But thinks for the Jiffy Lube analogy haha. I like your efficiency. 😀

Stop it. You're hurting my feelings.

I was taught to never let anyone control your emotions, especially an internet site... Eh, they should know. I know what you're saying. I think what's wrong with our society is that people cannot handle the truth anymore. Things are way too watered down. As Joe Dirt would say, "say it, don't spray it."
