is it necessary to have someone look over a secondary before submission?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
not necessarily but always good to have someone catch grammatical mistakes

All my friends and family members are tired of reading my essays, so I'm doing my own editing (not sure how smart that is). Hope that helps? There's a threat somewhere of people that volunteered to read each other's secondaries if you want to do that!

I had my pre-med advisor look over them with me during the summer through skype. She gave me a lot of helpful advice.

nothing is "necessary" but if you're asking whether the essays are as important as your primaries/PS, the answer is yes, absolutely. give them the same level of treatment/attention.

The more time we spend eyeballing our own essay and working on it the more attached we get to it and the more infatuated we are with the idea that it is gold(it's a big reason why everybody thinks they write great essays when in reality the vast majority are the definition of average). Having other people who can give legitimate feedback provide the necessary perspective and knocking you down a few pegs that you need.

The thing to avoid is people who give bad feed back or don't know what they are talking about. Stubborn ill informed pre-med advisors who think they are in the know are the first people who come to mind here. But good feedback from those who can provide good perspective? That's invaluable.

I would be willing to look over your secondaries if you want. Not sure how helpful I would be, but if you just want someone else to read through it, PM me.

I had the major essays (diversity, adversity, underserved, etc. etc.) proofread by 3 of my friends who are all med students. I applied to like 30 schools so I think it would be unrealistic to have them proofread 30 essays for me, but who knows. There is literally only benefit in having more eyes look over your writing.

I have at least one other person read each secondary essay I write. The larger ones i have numerous people read. That said, my partner who i live with is a journalist, so that definitely helps. But i gotta say, i am so tired of writing about myself and regurgitating the same information. And anyone who knows me knows that i never tire of talking about myself. I actually get excited when i see a fun secondary prompt beyond the standard, how are you diverse, why do you want to come here etc

Just be sure that

1) if you use the name of the school in the essay that the name is the correct one and not one you failed to delete when you submitted the same essay to a different school

2) the name of the school is spelled correctly. The old adage, I before E does not apply to Feinberg, Einstein and Weill.

For schools that I was most serious about, I had some people look them over.
