I was wondering if the DAT is like an intelligence test where you hit a peak and cannot improve or is it really based on how hard you work. I will study for a year if I have to but I was wondering if it will be useful?????? I would be happy with 19 or 20 or 21, whatever.

It is not an IQ test. You can learn what you need to know to get 25+ on each section.

pat is iq, rest is studying and cramming

Although the PAT is not something you can memorize, by practicing the problems you can improve your score dramatically. If it was a true IQ test this would not be possible.

dat is mainly based on preparation. yes, an intelligent person usually scores higher, but to achieve topscores, it's all about the amount of time you place on studying.

Come on man, i've never heard of anybody studying for the DAT!

Just kidding. DAT is all about preparation. They are not going to test how big of a genius you are. They will test how much you know.

although months of studying for the dat obviously would improve your scores, it is also possible to get the scores you want by paying attention in your science classes. for me, I was able to study the weekend before and get the scores i wanted. this way i wasn't stressing out about the test for months. so depending on how long ago you took those courses and how much work you put into to them is how you should base how much studying is needed.

Agreed. More preparation = higher scores. But of course along the same lines, more intelligence + more preparation = even higher scores 🙂

Well, obviously for the science section, the more studying you get done, the better you will do. For reading comprehension, QR and PAT, the key is practice. Even people bad at these things will do very well if they have enough experience solving these types of questions. For QR for instance, if you have seen a type of question over and over again, the more you do them, the more you will understand the solution. Also, the more you practice, the faster you will be able to complete the section, which is pretty important. The only part you can't really prepare for is angle ranking on PAT's (after tons of practice, I still sucked at it, and felt the practice questions were too easy on that part). For me, angle ranking had alot of luck involved, but for the rest of the exam, the more you prepare, the better you will do.

Reviewing for the DAT...thats a sign of being insecure and weak....JUST KIDDING. Try topscore and kaplan, they are worth their money. Dont stretch your review over a month or youll 4get stuff. Good luck 🙂

I took the kaplan as well. I did the summer course, and just kept up with all the reading/practice assignments and studied during the week...then took the DAT right after. The kaplan reading material for the sciences is great...if you can obtain a kaplan book for science section of the MCAT that's even better. The multiple practice tests are really what helped me the most. The only section that was really ify for me...was the reading section b/c I scored very high doing kaplan practice tests, but the whole setup was different on the real exam, and I didn't do as well as my other sections-was pretty disappointed about that. but YES like everyone else has said preparation and practice is the key.
