Since IM is 3 yrs and Surgery is 5 years, how does the IBR work for this? Will the surgery program just not pay you for the 2 extra years?

You will only receive half of the Medicaid payment reimbursement for the last 2 years. The program will have to figure out the other half.. a lot of times it’s not a big deal as the state or the institution also contribute to resident payments, however, certain programs will frown upon you as an applicant due to this.

You will get paid the same, the program will have to be okay with funding it from somewhere else. Some programs have positions funded from outside CMS, for them it’s not an issue. For others it may be.
