I was looking over my submitted PDF's, and for JHU's secondary, I wrote University of Chicago in the concluding sentence rather than Johns Hopkins University.

When I was reviewing before submitting, I must of read it over too fast and just didn't read the last sentence.

Should I basically withdraw from JHU now, or hope for the best???

JHU and UChicago at least aren't rivals right? It's not like messing up UCLA and Stanford, or Harvard and Yale or something correct? Or is it equally bad.

Well it's not a good mistake regardless if they're rivals or not. And unfortunately, I think they are rivals in the sense that they have a similar reputation in many areas.

If you submitted already, you paid already. Whats the point of withdrawing? Let it ride.

You are so unbelievably boned.

Don't withdraw - there's no point. Maybe you'll get lucky and the adcoms will skim through your essays without noticing. Probably not, but maybe you are the luckiest man alive. Who knows?

Ouch. Hope that wasn't your top choice.

I'm cringing because in my research essay on AMCAS, I somehow left out two letters in the name of a postdoc who I worked for (no letter of rec from him, so hopefully it should be OK).

Probably fatal, but no sense in withdrawing or pointing it out to them. Let them find your mistakes. Treat it as a lesson learned for future secondaries, if you have any more to do.

Think on the bright side.

1. You wanted your secondary essay to be memorable and to impress them. It probably will.

2. You may bring a smile to someone's face who hasn't had anything to laugh about all day.

3. You're already making a lot of people happy that they weren't the ones who did that. (It's one of those things that just about everyone worries about doing.)

It's not great, but it's not the end of the world. You shouldn't withdraw. If you get as far as an interview, you'll have something to break the ice.

Obviously, if they ask you if you've applied anywhere else, you'll have to say yes.

is it possible to call in their secretary and ask for a favor, or better to leave it alone?

I mean, I have like 10 top choices, but I definitely ranked JHU about the top 6 of those top 10 choices...

So on your top 10, JHU is #6, or thats how it looks to me. That means you have 9 other schools where you didn't report the wrong name. As long as you're a strong candidate you shouldn't have to worry too much.

The secretary isn't going to change your essay for you, dude.

The moral of the story is NEVER read your secondaries again once they're sent.

And also, don't notify anyone about it. Just draw attention to the error.

It's possible to call and ask, yes. But don't do it! She can't help you with that and it will just bring it more strongly to their attention.

Just ride with it. It's done. Laugh and make light of the error if anyone brings it up; otherwise, you'll stress out over that one minor mess up so badly that you botch everything else.

alright.

If I DO receive an interview from hopkins though, I'm totally gonna connect my flight to vegas after the interview and go there for a few hours and try my luck.

I second that. I think you're GPA and MCAT matter more than anything. If you have a 44T MCAT score and a 4.0, I don't think they'll care whether you mixed their names or not, they'll probably extend you an interview invitation simply on your objective numbers alone. The only case where this might matter is if you're right at their borderline (i.e. within a few points of their MCAT or GPA cut-off). Now given the fact that most people don't get an interview (much less an acceptance) from JHU no matter how stellar their application, the outcome would probably have been the same regardless of whether you misspelled their name or not.

gonna go cut myself with a knife and then bandage it, it'll make me feel better

at least I won't have to worry about staying up until 3:30 central for Mayo email tonight, until Tuesday that is...

Oh man. STOP READING YOUR ALREADY SENT SECONDARIES! It's not doing you any favors.

not much you can do now. hope for the best and quadruple check any more of your secondaries that you'll be sending out like the next day when you're not a zombie from cranking them out.

no use in beating yourself up about it now.

I just wasted 30 primary + 75 secondary + 40 interfolio + 17 paper copy + 3 photo on a single school (JHU), and almost as much for stanford (25 interfolio, no paper copy).

night all

it sucks, but let it go.

go to your fridge and drink a cold beer. watch some ridiculously inane tv. wake up tomorrow and start over.

If you're applying to Johns Hopkins you must be applying to a lot of schools. Luckily, Johns Hopkins is more of a reach school so no huge loss there even if they do reject you over the mistake.

Also, I wouldn't have put this on a public forum that most medical schools know about. Might've clued Johns Hopkins adcoms to check for that mistake (;

If you used pseudo-names in your original post on the other hand, I'm sure johns hopkins adcoms will be all like "touche..."

Yea it sucks to 'waste' money, but none of us know if this mistake will affect what the outcome of your application would have been otherwise. Also in the grand scheme of med school the 'wasted' money is a rounding error when you are going to be paying 150-250k over the next four years.

I'm 21 and I don't drink alcohol, but I do drink alot of water though. But yea, I think I'll go watch some britney's early on music videos, they make me happy and they are relaxing. I considered cutting my pinkie with a knife and then bandaging it up in gauze, but decided that it would hurt too much.

ok, then watch britney and eat some chocolate cake or something. distract yourself. no use in freaking out about it. it won't change anything.

please do not hurt yourself. this is not that serious. you still have a chance at a lot of other schools.

I've already spent 6K pre-interview so far, and I'm not even counting the clothing yet. I'm just sad that after spending so much trying to do everything perfectly, I make the stupid mistake that I actually LOL'd at when I read it in the essay guide book that I bought.

i know this sucks, but EVERYONE makes dumb mistakes at some point.

don't even think about it anymore.

I hope you are kidding but if not DON'T CUT YOURSELF!! Harming yourself solves nothing. If this a coping method that you use, I urge you to seek professional assistance ASAP.

17 paper copy? it cost you $17 to send in the paper copy?

Its best to impress the adcoms by having your application pressed into gold leaf and framed. Makes it stand out!

uh you called stanford by a different name too?

All right, you made a mistake (expensive one) and it's done. You can't undo it and trying to undo it is likely to compound it. You can learn from this and carefully proofread any business correspondence in the future or you can continue to try to "bargain" mentally which achieves nothing.

This mistake may not make any difference at all. In this case, don't bring it up or make any reference to this. The case could happen that no one even notices that you made this mistake. At any rate, it's in the past and you can't change the past but you can change your attitude towards the future. Your future needs to let this one go.

It's done and like others have said to you, "Let it go". There are no "do overs" here so stop trying. Yes, it might cost you admission to JHU but the medical school that does not accept you has no role in your future as a physician.

Let this go. I will repeat, LET THIS GO.

Yes! I love it. #2 is exactly what I first thought...probably because I laughed when I first read it. Only because I totally thought I was going to do the same thing, though!

I really hope this cutting thing is some sort of twisted, not at all funny joke. Otherwise, maybe you should tell someone about your urges?
