to not go to the informal dinner the night before many of these interviews? i appreciate the value of talking to students during the dinner, but i'm just not sure i can take the extra time off from work to get to the dinners on-time. but i don't want this to come off as a lack of interest. any opinions?

I missed the formal dinner to go out on a date with a girl I met during the interview....

if you're around town, go to the dinner.

don't stay in to rest up or prepare. one of the most important things about going on interviews is to determine if you fit in with the student/school atmosphere and culture. The main way to do this is to hang out with students.

Will you be looked at as rude or have anything held against you? No.

But it's for your benefit.

I'd say that those dinners are there for you. If missing work is too much of a hardship, then politely decline them.

i definately didn't go to the night-before dinners, mostly because i always have class or lab, or exams before then. but i always tell them explicitly that i can't make it, and i ask if this is acceptable. the administrative people are always really nice and give you a straight-up answer.
