I'm still new here and not sure if this is the right forum for my question, but here goes...

I only applied to 5 schools when I originally submitted my AMCAS application because that was all I can afford. Now that I've gotten my MCAT score back (29), I'm getting really nervous and wondering if it would be worth it to take out a small loan and apply to every low/mid tier school to increase my chances. It's so late in the cycle that I'm not sure it'd make the difference, but then again I'd hate to start over with the application process next year if there's still a chance of getting in for 2014. What do you guys think? Putting yourself in my position (seriously broke), what would you do?

It's pretty late. Check the deadlines for primary/secondary submissions. I think most schools quit taking primaries in November.

If they'll still take it, you're stressing out, and you can afford the extra ~$120 per school, I'd say go for it.

You should try to get financial aide to help cover the initial application costs. If they apprve, you could apply to up to 14. The other thing about your post tells me you have a lot to learn. in terms of timing, aide, where to apply, and even whether your application is the strongest.

In your case, I also think your MCAT is seriously low and can providet you from getting into any medical school. You might have success in getting into a DO program, but the programs are more expensive and … it might not be what you want. The magic number is over 30+.

Not sure if you apply next year, but to differnet school that you'd be listed as a reapplicant.

29 isn't "seriously low" I have a 29 and sitting at 7 II's, but it obviously depends if OP has a good GPA or not.

Anyways, OP, it is rather late. I would only add in state schools since all low (and esp. mid) tier OOS schools are pretty much swamped with applications. But it's still early and you can get an II later on in the cycle so don't fret too much.

Those are arguably the schools where submitting a late application would be least likely to be worthwhile. Low tier schools get deluged the moment AMCAS opens with apps from every desperate applicant with a sub-par GPA and/or MCAT. Save your money. As someone who applied to late one year, I strongly suggest saving your money and re-applying next year. You can apply to get a fee waiver if you really face that much economic hardship.

I have a 3.89 cGPA and 3.82 sGPA.

I have already applied for UNMC and Creighton here in Nebraska. I was considering adding Iowa, Kansas, or North Dakota. Thanks for your input.

Certainly we all have a lot to learn. That's why I came here for advice.

I respectfully disagree. Plenty of people get into medical school with a 29 MCAT. I think my trying to apply this cycle even though I'm late to the game will hurt me considerably more than my MCAT score.

Ahhh, that makes sense. Thanks for responding! 🙂
