Sorry to bother all of you, but I have a quick question about the application process. I just finished my undergraduate in Missouri and moved to New Orleans in plans to do a masters program at Tulane as my grades are not so competitive for medical school. However, recently I just found out about D.O. school and started to shadow a D.O. physician down here and am loving it.

Instead of doing a masters I want to apply to some D.O. schools. Is it still possible to apply? I know that an early application will make or break the acceptance sometimes. I am sure that I will be confident enough to ask the D.O. doc for a LOR in maybe 2-3 weeks. My stats are a 3.1-3.2 and a 27 on the MCAT. I have worked in the med field for a long time and have some volunteer work as well.

I want to go somewhere warm as well...maybe TUCOM, AZCOM or LECOM (in Florida?) Do you guys think I have a shot even if I applied now...and need a few weeks for the D.O. LOR (I understand most schools require one).

Thanks...and SDN is a godsend.

No, it's not at all too late. Start the application now. You won't need the letter until a few weeks/month down the road. You've done all the tough stuff (MCAT, grades), so start on the app. It's at https://aacomas.aacom.org

You would be applying for admission for fall of 2006, however. The application cycle for class entering in fall 2005 is over. You could perhaps bang out a quick masters in a couple of fields in a year... or have fun for a year, do applications (get poor), shadow, work in the medical field, etc.

May 15th to July 15th - Early

July 16th to Sept 15th - you're still fine

Sept 16th to Oct 15th - you're still ahead of those waiting for their MCAT score

Oct 16th and beyond - congrats...you just screwed yourself

(I was in the last category)

My AACOMAS wasn't done until the end of Oct...certified right around the holidays...secondaries at the new year.

Go for it. You have great stats. My mcat was a 27 as well. My GPA was a bit better...but I think you'll be fine. Don't bother with a masters if you can help it. I got a masters and I don't think it was advantageous in the end. If you can't get in this year, I would maybe do some upper sciences or something, but commiting to a masters can be a pain and delay you a whole 2-3 yrs.

Oh yeah...try not to limit yourself to warm weather. If you really want to go for 2006 apply broadly 😀

Oh yeah...definitely DO NOT wait for the letter from the DO. Apply now! You won't even need the letter for nearly 2 months if you were to submit the AACOMAS tonight.
So don't let any LORs hold up the process of getting the AACOMAS underway.

Yeah...because you figure about 6 weeks for AACOMAS, another 1-2 weeks for secondaries to come, then once you start getting bombarded with secondaries it can take a week or two to get that stuff turned around and sent back out again. So you can see it will be a little while before you even need LORs in general. 🙂

Again, apply now for Fall 06. It's only July, so you're still ahead of the game. Just make sure to get those transcripts in to AACOMAS ASAP since this is what seems to slow you down the most.
