is it too late to apply now?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied last year in mid-Aug. and ended up getting accepted, so not necessarily, although I do think that applying late is not the smartest thing to do. It depends on your situation. Is your essay ready? Can you submit really soon? If so, it's probably not too late. If you won't be able to get it in for a month, then it might be. Whether it's a waste of money is a judgement call. If you're a borderline applicant already, then you might be wasting your time applying late, but who knows. It would have been better to apply early, but since it's too late for that you have to decide if you want to take your chances this year or wait till next. It's up to you, really.

Too late?! Please don't listen to the crackheads roaming SDN (although I guess that would include me as well?). The deadlines for filing AMCAS for schools at the EARLIEST is Oct. 15th. Should you apply as early as possible? Of course. But applying in August, even late August, isn't that bad... and if you can get all your secondaries and letters in to schools by end of August/ early September, you should be fine! I have several non-OCD friends (why do they hang out with me?) who haven't even started filling out their AMCAS forms, and they're not worried. I know people who have applied as late as November and gotten in.

Don't worry... if you want to reapply, reapply. The more important question isn't whether it's too late, but whether you are a more competitve applicant this year than last year. Good luck!!

you can apply now, without having the MCAT in hand. Waiting till Oct will severly hurt your chances, even if they do not completely eliminate them. You certainly increase your chances of playing the waitlist game if you wait till Oct.

I applied in the first week of OCTOBER and received multiple acceptances to good schools. So...I don't think it's too late for you. Good luck!!

well the first round, I applied only to tx schools. This time I'm applying out of state. So technically its my "first" time to apply to these schools. I have avg stats. I just submitted my amcas today. I guess I'll take my chances...

Well I applied in june, but they say that apps aren't considered until MCAT scores are in. Is it ok because I applied in june or does it not matter? I'm totally hanging myself aren't I? My premed advisor says that there's nothing wrong with takinfg the August MCAT.

You'll be fine.

Please correct me if I'm wrong... Isn't it AMCAS policy to give you some sort of refund if you're accepted off of a waitlist in this situation? I say go for it and DEFINITELY apply to a bunch of upper/mid/lower (25/50/25%) schools to increase your chances, along with out of state. I hope you get that acceptance before you have to do all the other BS.

The key is to have your primary, secondaries and letters of recommendation in as soon as possible so that the school can begin reviewing your file on the day the MCAT score is released.

If you do that you will not be that much later than the people who submitted in June but didn't get their secondaries and letters of rec in till September!

Word to your mothers....

I took the Aug mcat last year. I made sure I had EVERYTHING(primaries, LORs, Secondary essays, Secondary fee, passport photos, the kitchen sink, EVRYTHING) turned into the schools BEFORE( Did I say BEFORE? I meant BEFORE!!!) the Aug MCAT results come out in October.

This way, like skypilot said, once the schools get your mcat scores the adcoms start reviewing it as soon as they can get to it. I walked away with 11 interview invites and 4 accepts. So it is possible with aug scores to do decently in the process.

I'm always amazed by the number of people who take the aug mcat and decide after they get their scores to finally start applying and sending in their primary in october.

Granted...some schools(ie Stanford, the UC's) won't send you the secondary until your scores come in. Thus you can't have everything turned into them before your scores come in. In any event thats only a few schools. Besides, I still scored an interview at Stanford even with my aug mcat scores so it is possible.

i couldn't movitate myself to write my personal statement and the lil blurbs about my ECs until late august...didn't seem to hurt me...yeah u may get secondaries later from schools that screen but thats life...ya know...u can still get accepted...so i say go for it

Hi Everyone!
I submitted my AMCAS on July 29, but I am still waiting for one of my transcripts to get there so my application process is on hold. I should have sent in my transcript requests sooner, so now i'm just waiting and i'm veryyyy nervous since it may take 6 weeks to process. I have avg/ below avg stats...so i thought my best bet would be to send my stuff in early, but it's turning out that it's not early after all. Do you think submitting AMCAS in mid august is suicide for below avg person?

Also, my counselor told me NOT to take aug mcat. she said i'd just be applying to get on the wait list... i thot she was being overly dramatic, but I took her word for it and I took my MCAT in july and i'm nervous as heck.

Thanks and good luck to everyone!!

well you will beverified in about 6 weeks. during that time work on secondaries and make sure your LORs are in order. get those secondaries done so you can send them out immediately after verification and/or schools sending them to you

Did you really have to bump a 2003 thread to say this? At least when you do, please tell folks you are doing so, so nobody responds to someone who hasn't been on SDN for years.

I think you can, but get the ball rolling asap!

Applying late hurts your chances but it's not the end of the world. Plenty of people get accepted later in the cycle.

Just to try complete all of your files as soon as possible. I would say the latest possible is the end of September. If you're not complete by then, it is possible that most schools will finish offering interview spots before they get to your file.
