I am considering applying to LECOM and NYU. I have average DAT scores and overall gpa=3.6 and sci=3.48, and tremendous research/volunteer experience. What do you guys think?

If you've got the money and you're confident you can get all the supporting info (ex. transcripts) in on time, I say go for it.

Whats your DAT if you dont mind sharing?

AA 19/PAT 20

Do I have to re-send all transcripts also?

The schools will definitely be grateful for your thoughtful donation. "Tremendous research/volunteer experience" are not good substitutes for competitive DAT.

oops, I misread that as "above average" DAT. Id say wait until next cycle, its already extremely late and even a highly competitive DAT might not be enough to grab the few remaining seats once everything is processed

Don't do it. It would be a waste of money applying this late and with an average DAT score.

Apply to a few private schools: temple, NYU, Boston, Tufts. you will have a greater chance at these schools since their classes have not been filled yet.

If you wait, you can apply to more schools and have a greater chance of getting in. As other people have mentioned, lots of seats have been filled or will get filled soon. You can even retake the DAT if you want to get a higher score and a better chance of getting offers from multiple schools. It's only a matter of four and a half months.

But wouldn't that be for next year? If you get in now you would be able to go to school this September right? and If you apply during summer you would be late a year

Its too late unfortunately. But your stats are on par with their interviewees I think.

It would be for next year, correct. The OP can apply now but most of the seats are filled or will be filled soon. It's better to save all the application fees for the 2013 cycle (which starts this summer) because there is a greater chance of getting into dental school. Time plays a huge factor in applying.
