Hey guys-

I just got waitlisted at my "safe" MD school, and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice as to if I could still apply to some DO schools and be considered whatsoever. The deadlines seem a little later than MD schools, but I know that doesn't always mean anything. So can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks!

Dave

I really don't think there is a downside, except additional cost. Go for it, especially if you have a strong application. If you don't get in this cycle, you're a reapplicant whether you applied to 1 or 20 schools (nothing wrong with reapplying). It will take you some time to be verified through AACOMAS if you aren't already. I have a friend who went to DMU (DO school). He applied very late and was accepted. Try to shadow a DO asap. Maybe you could update the schools with your shadowing experience, how it has steeled your resolve to become a DO, and maybe add a recommendation letter from a DO.

Good luck.

I met a woman at Touro NV who took her MCAT in January and didn't apply until February. So while you're not going to be in as good a shape as you would have been had you applied six months ago, you've still got a shot.

I'd be careful, though- DO schools are leery of people using them as a fallback for MD. Just be sure that you want to do this for the right reasons.

Hey...thanks to both of you for your responses. It's kind of like a breath of fresh air. I have, actually, already shadowed a DO and had him write a letter of recommendation for me. As for "doing it for the right reasons," I am all about the medical field, helping people, making health care as affordable as I can, and being able to learn a great deal in the process/use that knowledge to aid my profession. No matter what two letters are behind my name, I want to be a doctor. Is there REALLY that big of a difference, when it really comes down to it?

I'm a non traditional student with a BSc Honours Geophysics from Canada. I screwed up pretty badly when I was 18-19 so my GPA was really low back then. The last two years I've had a Science GPA 3.6 and same w/ my overall. My total for my degree is 3.4 and total overall is 3.2. My MCAT was 28p.

I have lots of life/volunteer experience.

Is it WAY too late for me to apply for Fall 2010???

It's refreshing to hear someone that knows what they're doing and why they're doing it. No, there's definitely not a big difference in how medicine looks as an MD or a DO- heck, take out OMM and it's almost exactly the same. Good luck!

It's not WAY too late, but you ought to hurry. Classes are getting filled up. Your stats aren't going to blow anyone away, but especially considering the upward trend, I would say that at least a few schools will be interested. Get writing and good luck!
