I have a low step score so I'll only be applying to less competitive FM rotations. In this case, is it worth it to do audition rotation at those sites?
Very well said. A lot of med students tend to look better on paper and hence auditions will absolutely hurt you big time.On the flip side, if you do badly, it WILL hurt.
Weigh how you will look on paper versus how you will seem in person. If you do considerably better in person, this could be your best shot at somewhat more competitive FM residencies than you might otherwise secure. But if you are less likely to 'shine' in person, since you're planning to apply less competitively, you might be better off not taking the risk.

Can't hurt. You won't match there based on your application with a low step score. If you go there and everyone likes you great. If no one likes you, no big deal. It can only hurt you if you do poorly and the faculty talk amongst themselves.
All the surgical subspecialties people do aways, not sure why you can't do an away for family and shine.
Edit: my post is only for doing aways at more competitive places. not places within your reach
It's actually quite likely for residents to not like a rotating student. This is far more likely in FM too. They like people with super nice warm personalities and a lot of people don't have that. Also it takes just one resident to not like you for whatever reason (ex. you're accidently late one day) and you're screwed.
Surgical subspecialties don't care (or even want) a warm personality.
In contrast I've seen plenty of FM residents who were absolutely not nice. On average it's Peds FM and a few random specialties that are overall composed of friendly people. And the nicest residents I met were from gen surg and ortho 🙂I worked with a ton of FM residents. If there's a specialty that is made out of legitimately just nice people, it's FM. I don't know where there's this rumor about Peds attendings and residents being the nicest in all services, but it's complete bull.
All FM residents that I have worked with, 6-8 people so far, have been super nice and relaxed about things. You literally just have to be normal, hold up a convo, and not be weird by saying stupid crap for them to like you.
